How to make a mantilla veil (tutorial)

Charlotte, on April 19, 2013 at 2:01 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 3

I am not trying to take away business from anyone, I'm sure there are plenty of brides out there who refuse to spend $300 on something you will only wear for less than an hour, and practically will only cost you less than $50 to make. I spent about 3 hours making mine.

Things you will need:

Fabric pencil tied low to a string (believe it or not I used my white eye pencil for this one)

Pins

Tulle (mine was 64 " long)

Lace trim (scalloped ones works best, I got mine from Joann *pics*)

Clear nylon threads (the ones that look like fish line)

Good pair of scissors (your tulle will fray if you use a dull one)

Clear wax (a plain white candle stick will do)

Needle (the longer the better, but it has to be thin)

So here it goes, make sure you have a large area to work with; you will need enough space to lay your tulle flat, now fold the tulle in half get your fabric pencil and string draw a curve on each end, your fabric is supposed to look more an oblong than a circle, the cut out the excess with a sharp scissors. Take your lace and start pinning it to the edge of your tulle *pics*. Now this is where your wax will come in, thread your needle then run it through the wax, the reason for this, it makes the thread a little stiff, so it will prevent tangles while you are sewing (that’s the trick when you are using nylon thread). Now you can start sewing, I just used a basic running stitch, nothing complicated, make sure to pull your thread gently to avoid fraying your tulle, they are quite delicate, and there you have it, that’s all I did, *finish pic*. Most of the materials I already have on hand, the only thing I bought was the tulle which is $1.08/yd (it was on sale that day) then the lace is a little bit pricey $12.00 / yd, but because I have 50% coupon I only spent $35.40 total, not bad right? I hope I somehow helped some of you brides, have fun!!!
