How to lose inches in a specific area?

Amanda, on March 13, 2020 at 8:25 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 1 11

Went to my first fitting appointment yesterday and my dress (trumpet) is too tight through the hips and thighs. They are going to let it out a bit but I need to do some work also. Does anyone know of any exercises to help with losing inches in the hips and thighs? I'm also doing WW with my mom and this first week is an adjustment but mom is helping as she has been doing WW for 6 months and lost 30lbs. I'm hoping to lose 10-15 by wedding!!

So technically you can't "target" an area but my track coach always said long distance running breaks muscles down. That's why distance runners always have thin legs. I'd hop on the treadmill 3 times/week and start building up your endurance to run 3-4 miles a few times a week. I'm sure you'll see some great resultsSmiley smile

Agree with PP. I've read that running is good for losing inches everywhere, I think since it tones muscle instead of building, so you'll slim down.

As Taylor said, you can’t target fat loss. You’ll have to watch your calorie intake and increase your cardio to achieve overall weight loss, and then depending on your body you’ll lose the weight in some areas before others. For me, my stomach is the first area where I lose or gain weight, and my love handles and thighs are the last to tone up.

Unfortunately you can't lose in specific areas, but I would focus on resistance training and protein then of course watching your calorie intake. Like mentioned above, running (especially done frequently) will break down muscle. This is NOT what you want to happen - muscle keeps our metabolic rate high and helps our bodies burn more body fat. I know there is always a fear of getting "bulkier" when it comes to lifting weights, but as long as you are in a calorie deficit (eating less than burning) it will just help your body look toned and burn more body fat.

I have a few nutrition certifications and am about finished with my personal training cert, so if you have any questions I would be happy to help Smiley smile

Blogilates has many 30 day challenges. One of her 30 day core ones made me unexpectedly lose more inches on my hips than abdomen😀

Spot reducing isn't a thing - you can't tell your body to lose weight in one area while keeping it in others. That is why many female bodybuilding competitors (everything from bikini to physique to actual bodybuilding categories) have breast implants.

Also as Annajoy says every body is different. I carry the most weight in my hips and thighs as well. When I lose gain/weight I have the most fluctuation in my hips/butt/thighs, losing/gaining several inches in those areas while other parts of my body have minimal differences. My weight has fluctuated by as much as 30 lbs in my adult life, but my bra size and bust has never changed, only my waist/hip/thighs and jean size. My overall clothing size for tops pretty much stays the same though.

Long distance slow jog (more than 1h) will make your body to feed from fat while doesn't make your muscles bigger. you will have better results if you do that at the fasted state. if you combine fasting with low carb diet and long EASY (low intensity) cardio, you will be able to achieve your goal guaranteed! Just by cutting carbs, you will lose lots of water and volume.

I am a personal trainer with years of experience helping women to lose weight. I have tested everything and this is the best you can do.

    I hope that helped.

Check my legs out. Long distance runners come in all sizes. I mean yeah the fast ones are thin, but you don’t have to be thin to run and running doesn’t make you thin either. In fact your body adjusts to the extra cardio output and works to conserve energy. I’ve been running for 7 years, and always what most would consider a long distance runner, the last 3 years I’ve been running 50Ks.

While you can’t target fat loss from a specific area, you can target muscle toning in specific areas. So you’ll want to combine high water intake, lower calorie intake with cardio and muscle toning exercises. You can’t out exercise a bad diet, it just doesn’t work. Increase your low calorie veggies (greens, carrots, broccoli), they’ll help you feel full longer and also give the good fiber you need too.

I disagree. If you're consistent with your workouts and run regularly, you absolutely will thin out. Most of losing weight is 20% exercise and 80% diet. You need a balance to see results so I'm definitely not saying "go out and run 4 miles, 4 times a week and you'll have thin legs!" It takes more than that. Something else that might help is a mix between distance and interval training. Go on a 4 mile run and then the next day, run (6) 400m runs at 70% with a 3 minute recovery between each. Everyone's body is different, but it is a proven fact that consistently running will burn calories and fat.

You cannot target one set area. Do various cardio (running, jumping Jack's, jump rope, elliptical, biking, yoga), eat more veggies and fruits, leaner meats (chicken and fish), eat fiber filled food to keep you fuller longer (oatmeal), drink a lot of water (helps keep you fuller longer, and helps with digestion, bloating, and metabolism), get rid of salt which aids in bloating, you can sit in saunas, or do hot yoga, running, etc, to get out toxins and help you get rid of bloating.
