How to include FSD (future step daughter)

shawna, on December 1, 2010 at 11:42 AM Posted in Planning 0 16

My FI has a 6 year old daughter and I was wondering if anyone would mind sharing some ways to include her in our ceremony. We are doing a very small ceremony at our reception site as this is a 2nd wedding for both of us so I'm just looking for something to symbolize that I am not just agreeing to marry her daddy, but be faithful to her as a "bonus mom" too.

Thanks!

I've heard of "family vows" recited at weddings. Basically, after you and and your FH exchange vows, you would say something to her like "I promise to love, honor, cherish you as my daughter..." Something simple, but something that acknowledges her.

My FH has a 2 year old and we have decided to involve her in the sand pouring ceremony, we each have a dffrent color sand that we pour and it represent the uniting of the 3 of us not just me and her daddy. Maybe you can do something like that.

My FSD (much older than yours, but doesn't matter) will do a reading during our family blessing. My bio daughter is doing the toast (and one of the adults in the party will take part in toast as well). Both have all hands on deck for the DIYs so they are doing more than enough for the wedding.

My fiance has a daughter who will be 7 at the time we get married. She has been a flower girl in so many weddings I can't even keep track so I decided to let her be a Junior Bridesmaid for the wedding.

My Husband has a 7 yr old daughter. She was the flower girl at our wedding but she also was a part of our unity candle ceremony.

Yup, those are things i've heard about

    - family unity, say a vow to the daughter (smaller than to FS) & then give her some piece of jewelry

    - sand unity, 3 colors... 1 for you, daughter, FS

    - unity candle as Starsteph84 has shown you

We will have all three of our boys (my two and his one) participate in the sand ceremony and each will be given a ring.

There is a family unity medallion that can be given to each child (step-parent to step-child). Because it's on a chain, as the child grows, the medallion can be put on longer chains.

I've done weddings with the vows to the children and also have the children participate in the unity sand celebration.

This is how we are including our children. My son (17) is going to be one of the groomsmen as well as walking me down the aisle. His daughter (11) will be my Junior Maid of Honor.

We are including my FH's 2 daughters/son in the sand ceremony. I am letting them choose their favorite sand color. They/myself/FH are all going to have individual slender glass vases of our colored sand, and then pour all together into a larger vase. Found the vases at the DollarGeneral. Cute and reasonably priced! Smiley smile

Oh and and to add... Smiley smile his 13 daughter is going to be my JR Bridesmaid, and his younger daughter our "ring carrier girl" Not sure the right name for it as she does not want to be a flower girl but carry the rings down. Smiley smile His son is a groomsmen too.

Thanks a ton, ladies. I really appreciate it.

I agree that I am not only marrying my FI but his daughter is a HUGE part of his life and she will be my "bonus daughter". (I had a HORRIBLE step mom so I am Anti Step Mom as far as terminology so we are going with Bonus-lol).

I think it'd be neat to give FSD a ring, since I'll be giving one to her dad and getting one from her dad (two actually-lol)

We weren't planning on having a "ceremony" though. We were just going to go to the courthouse on a Friday afternoon and then a reception on Saturday. However, now that I've thought/talked more about it, I'm wondering if we could just have a JOP at the reception site and do a quick ceremony then party it up. I kind of like the idea of our friends and family "seeing" us take our vows now...oops...hahaha
