How to have my cousin become an officiant?

Aimee, on February 25, 2014 at 5:09 PM Posted in Planning 0 17

Since we are not getting married in a church my cousin who is catholic father is unable to marry us. We decided we didn't want just any person we find off a vendor list so we asked our other cousin to see if he'd become an officiant. I was trying to google where to do this online, and I was scared that I was finding fake websites. Does anyone know a website and how much it is to become one? (I was hearing $50 dollars?) THANKS!!!

I have hear $25, I'm doing he same thing is well. Check with your state laws and they should be able to guide you in the right direction.

I think they just have to be a notary or a member of the clergy. My stepdad is a notary so he is going to officiate for us (which also solves my problem of how to incorporate him in my ceremony without stepping on my dad's toes). You can become a notary online. It takes an hour or two and is maybe $50 or so.

You can get ordained for free on ulc.com if you want to try that. If not, you'll have to search for your specific state's requirements. I'm in CA, and there's a "deputy for a day" program, and it's about $75 and a bit of paperwork.

Aimee, I advise caution with this decision. If you choose to do this I would highly make sure that it is legal within the state. If your cousin lives in one state and performs the ceremony in another state it may not legal. Important things to make sure of...

Average cost for an officiant or minister...range between $200.00 to $600.00. If an officiant provides others services sometimes more. Just my opinion...I don't feel that is a lot for a professional vendor.

Only 3 states, (Florida, South Carolina, and (I think) Massachusetts) authorize their Notaries to officiate at weddings in their states.

Make sure what the requirements are in the State & County where you'll be married.

I can marry couples anywhere in the state of Florida, but not another state. A Notary from another state can not marry a couple in Florida.

As others have said, make sure online ordination is legal in your state/county. I'm in CA, using the deputy for a day program ($44, not $75 - and it's a one-page form, super simple). I would call your county clerk's office and make sure your marriage will be legal if your cousin is ordained online.

I accidentally ordained myself while doing this research online. I called my county clerks office and she said I'm legally able to marry people. That's all it took and there's nothing further I have to do here in Michigan. I was shocked, I had to ask her like 5 different times. It varies by state. But definitely calling the clerks office helped :-) I didn't pay a thing either.

ULC is recognized in PA. It's free.

The point is not so much can they marry you but should they.

If it is that easy to get accidentally ordained online, I'd worry about who (or what) may end up as your officiant. David Dog, Cathy Cat, Robby Rabbit???

To become a Notary Public in Florida requires taking a course, passing a test, and having someone who has known you at least 6 months swear that you are of good character. I got commissioned so long ago that they were not yet offering classes or requiring tests. But, someone still had to swear I was of good character!

Under the judicial website I was on, it says PA isn't recognized. I live in Washington County.

THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE!!! My fiance's friend who had a sister officiant their wedding used the website: themonastery.org and it is official for ILLINOIS.

I just did not want to pay a large sum of money for someone I did not know to marry us. Our ceremony was only going to be about 30 minutes long.
