How to handle mystery gifts?

Amy, on January 11, 2018 at 7:28 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

We had quite a few gifts either get separated from their "friend" that may have had a card with it or just ones that came without a card at all. We also have quite a few guests who don't appear to have given us a gift, but they are ones that I would've expected it from. So I'm sure that these mystery gifts and those guests are probably connected, at least some of them.

Anyway, how do I handle sending thank you notes to the people who I may have received a gift from but I don't know? I don't want to thank them for their generous gift if they actually didn't give one...should I just thank them for attending and leave it?

I've seen a couple people post something on Facebook saying something like "hey we received a few generous gifts (list them) but the cards went MIA, please let us know if it was from you so we can relay our gratitude!" That way you're asking without directly asking someone who didn't give you anything (awkward) Good luck!

Are they physical gifts from your registry? If so, you can probably find out from the store who purchased it. We had something sent to our house with no packing slip so had no idea where it came from. I called Bed Bath and Beyond and they were able to tell me who purchased it.

Hmmm, that's awkward. Are you able to check your registry? I've heard that some of them will have who bought it listed. Maybe this will help you narrow it down. Would you be able to check with your parents/in-laws if they know the people? Maybe someone mentioned to one of them that they had got you, X.

    Good luck!

I've wondered what to do as well with the same. I had a mystery gift shipped to my house without a packing slip, receipt, or anything. I tried to call the number of the company on the box to find out who sent it but it was some random person's office number in MN (we don't know anyone there). So...yeah.

ETA: we're not registered anywhere. I'm hoping someone just brings it up randomly.

I really like this idea, that way you can give the proper thanks.

Some of the things were off the registry, some of them were not...and some were off a Zola registry and people forgot to mark things off so that's no help.
