How to get rid of smell from pre-owned wedding dress?

on June 18, 2020 at 5:25 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6
Hi all! So I purchased a pre-owned wedding dress from a bride online. It’s perfect in every way, except there’s a faint B.O. smell coming from the arm pits. The dress itself doesn’t emit any odor, but I can definitely smell the B.O. if I place my nose close to the fabric. Does anyone know of any tricks to get rid of the smell? The dress doesn’t allow dry cleaning, only spot cleaning. I’ve been spraying the area using vodka with lavender essential oil every few hours throughout the day. But are there any other tricks for getting rid of the smell?

Thank you all in advance!

What is the dress made out of that it doesn't allow dry cleaning? Dry cleaning uses specific chemicals, but that doesn't mean you can't take it to a bridal shop to have it cleaned. If the smell isn't gone at this point, I'm not really sure that it's going anywhere. I'd be worried about putting vodka and oils on the dress though.

I usually use watered down white vinegar to counteract and then air stuff out/ wash it. But vodka probably has the same effect I would think.

Not sure if steam cleaning would help? i heard that a steamer could help reduce odor.

I work at a bridal boutique and we have found that a steamer will actually enhance the smell. I would have a professional cleaner look at the gown and advise you as to what to spot clean the gown with. Some kind of baking soda mixture might work, but I’m not sure. See if you can find a company in your area that does gown cleaning and preservation that can advise you on the best method. They are usually familiar with gowns that can and can’t be dry cleaned so they may know what to do!

If you take it to the cleaners they can work with the fabric and will know the tricks of spot cleaning and deodorizing without dry cleaning fully.
