How to entertain the littles

Kerin, on May 26, 2020 at 1:42 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 17

We're going to have 11 children under 12 at our wedding. Any suggestions for how to keep them occupied during the less interactive parts - so when they aren't eating or dancing? Smiley laugh

We will only be having our closest relatives, so these kids are all cousins, with the exception of the 2 littlest, they're FH's and my (soon to be) grandbabies Smiley shame and they will only be 1 -1/2 and 3 at that time, so their mom doesn't want them sitting at the kids' table with the others who will be a couple years older and then some.

Everything is happening at the same location and in the same room, so they will have their own table and we can put anything we want at it to keep them from getting too rambunctious. Coloring and such might work for the 5 to 8 year olds, but the the 9 to 12s? I'm not sure. The older ones are all girls, so maybe they would enjoy being given disposable cameras and ask them to take pictures? Even if they only took pics of each other, I think that would be so cute...

    Thank you, Melle Smiley smile

Did you make little personalized activity bags for them or have a bunch of options available for them to pick from?

I didn't but that's a good idea. i had a separate table full of different games like monkey in a barrel, connect four etc so i noticed they were gone. i bought these activity books off of oriental trading co. it came with crayons and stickers too.

they have other versions. and when i bought them they were on sale so it was more like $5 for the set of a dozen.

Kids are surprisingly able to entertain themselves interacting with each other. If you're having dancing, they will spend the majority of their time doing that. I've seen some instances where the toys/games/coloring books didn't get touched because kids were dancing or hanging out with each other and quiet enough you didn't know they were still there.

My family took the whole old phrase of " kids are neither seen nor heard" route when it came to parties, and set a kids room or tent for every gettogether, which was great for everyone as adults got me time and kids got to play with others. I set a kids tent with a teacher watching them (worked at a school so I asked around), but i had color wall(butcher paper pinned up) recess toys, active games( ie twister) , regular board games, a reading book, McDonald's kids meals( thank you delivery guy) , a swing, and a neighbor brought her pets( chinchillas, pig, ball python, parrot-all well trained and supervised), and sleeping bags for when they got tired till the parent picked them up.

I don't believe in separating kids because for many people a wedding is a family event but that sounds fun.

Wow, that sounds amazing! Our venue is really small and our wedding is on Valentine's Day in Ohio, so we fully anticipate snow LOL if we were having it outside I would love to do something like yours! That would be an amazing experience for the kiddos!

We had 3 1/2 year olds and babies at our wedding, so we hired a sitter and had some toys. That said, the kiddos mostly ran around, danced, and played with each other. I think, at some point, a phone was sacrificed to play Frozen. (Of course.)

It's always nice to have something for the kids, so they feel involved, but once there's enough of them, imagination takes over!

I like the camera idea for the older ones, the coloring/activity idea, maybe some board games, hula hoops, cards, scavenger hunt, corn hole, etc. in-expensive things to keep them occupied.

Thank you, Naikesha! I'm having a very small winter wedding in Ohio (so expecting snow LOL) which limits us to indoor activities, but some of the outdoor suggestions are going to be put to use when we have our big celebration the following summer. I really love the scavenger hunt idea and I'm hoping I'm creative enough to make it fun for the little littles and the young teens Smiley winking we will see Smiley heart

We're also having kids. Ours range from a very tiny 4mth old up to 15yo, so a very large range. We haven't decided if there will be a "kids" table, because we also have some special needs kiddos attending that parents would likely want to keep close. Either way, we will have a table set up with coloring pages and games for the kids- so even if that's not where we end up sitting them, that's where all the activities will be!

That makes perfect sense! I figure I will ask the parents individually before I finalize seating arrangements for the caterer. That way no one will be put on the spot and there won't be kiddos feeling left out because their parents say no. If it's not a universal agreement, we'll put the kids' bags at their seats at their parents' table.

So I’m currently planning for my reception to be in and outdoors. I’m borrowing a cornhole set from a friend and planning to create a “giant yard tic tac toe” board and I’m currently leaning towards buying a giant jenga set and maybe borrowing my brother’s croquet set.
