How to Do A Dollar Dance, Without Money?

The great thing with the dollar dance is the money aspect seems to keep people moving though and I know if we get rid of it all together I won't get to spend time with everyone I want to (big party with big families).

Does anyone have any ideas how to mimic a dollar dance without people giving money?

The advice card idea might work. I also like the idea of your DJ or MOH having a cue to change partners.

I'm generally against the dollar dance for 2 reasons: 1) the money aspect is tacky IMO but that's what this post is about and 2) too many special "activities" or dances make your guests that just want to visit, dance, and party bored. Just get the party started sooner and try to dance with everyone on the open dance floor, mingle with guests who aren't dancing, and say hello during your receiving line.

Perhaps fake wedding money (think Monopoly money) or gelt would work?

That seems like a horrible idea @dropthemic. I don't know why you need a special dedicated time to socialize with your guests, that is what the reception is for. Do table visits and dance with everyone or whoever when your partying. Also, raffling is an embarrassing idea.

@ HIH I actually don't like the dollar dance and yesterday in the other thread I asked why it had to be money exchanged and couldn't be substituted with a hug for a dance or a kiss on the cheek for a dance and no one pro dollar dance answered my question. So yes alternatives were mentioned. However in fairness that whole thread sort of got off topic anyway so maybe everyone missed my question.

I agree with Emmy. I'm expecting for ours that everyone won't dance no matter how great the music is. FH and I just have to make time to try to visit with everyone at tables and throughout the reception. It seems to work for the weddings I typically attend, which rarely include a dollar dance.

Oh, I liked the idea of doing the little advice papers.

I am thinking about doing song changes ever 30 seconds. We have 150 people so if 45 people dance it will be about 22 minutes. I hoping for way less than that.

While I do plan to visit with as many people as possible, there is something that feels a bit more personal to dance with someone. I agree that there are other alternatives, and did acknowledge them in post, but also said I felt that it would be confusing to my guests, as I am sure that at least 90% of them are expecting the dollar dance.

    1) Unless both sides are deep set in that tradition, the money dance is tacky.

    2) Trying to find an alternative to money to spend time with guests because you want to dance just sounds ridiculous.

It's your wedding, but it's only about you to a certain extent. You also have an obligation to your guests to MAKE the time and thank them for coming, not find a way to incorporate them into YOUR dancing time.

Can I just say this. There are a lot of people on these threads who have a strong opinion about the dollar dance. Which is fine. But the question was not how do you feel about dollar dances, the question was alternatives to money. I provided an answer. Shots. Ive seen it done. I don't see a problem with it. Now back in the day the dollar dance was a tradition to help new couples get started in their new life together and the tradition of the dance has lasted this long as the traditional bride, wedding and couple have long since faded. Nowadays its a great way to get the older crowd who may not dance, a shot at dancing with the couple Also people apparently don't like the idea of a cash gift, which is fine. If you dont want to participate dont. But don't come on here and use words like tacky and awkward because you don't like it.

We're going to ask everyone to write advice on a small slip of paper and bring it with them to give for the dollar dance Smiley smile
