How to deal with Gnats/Bugs at outdoor venue (in NJ)

Mrs. eD2, on April 25, 2016 at 3:41 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

Hello my fellow brides to be!

We have a strange issue with our reception venue. We had our final tasting yesterday & toured the grounds again. There’s a beautiful garden in the back with a waterfall & bridge where we will take all of our formal photos and host the outdoor portion of our cocktail hour. It’s gorgeous except the place with infested with gnats by the bridge. There is some standing water below it which we think brought them out. It was only 72 degrees but they were everywhere in the area. My mom mentioned it to the Maitre’D whose response was simply “Oh yeah… nothing you can do to control the bugs…”

We don’t want our guests to be uncomfortable, &I don’t want to spend half our time taking formal photos swatting away the bugs. I’ve read you can have the venue sprayed about a week to a few days out from your day. Have any of you had to do this before? How much does something like this cost? We’re in Jersey. Don't want to rely soley on Raid spray. Thanks!

Hi EllieEngaged, welcome to WW! Make sure to upload a picture for your avatar (instead of the default icons) so that we can get to know you and tell you apart from all the other posters. You can do this on a desktop computer or a mobile browser (just not on the app) under My Settings and Profile and Privacy Settings.

Unless your venue told you this is an option, I wouldn't assume it was - you should definitely ask though! Do they have any open flame or decor restrictions? I'm thinking that you could also do citronella candles or torches. Worst case scenario you could also put out bug spray during the cocktail hour

I would definitely ask if that's an option as WWLynnie suggested!

Have you read any reviews on WW about this being an issue for guests? Maybe you can just put out a few cans of bug spray for your guests? Also, maybe consider having the cocktail hour both indoors and outdoors, if that's an option.

Ahh yes I need to change my avatar. I'll get right to that. We are definitely going to ask the venue if we can spray. They're concentrated where the waterfall and standing ponds are, but it's also where the bridge is to take photos. Definitely wouldn't want to just bring anything in to spray the back area without their approval first.

Citronella might be a possibility if they allow it! I can ask that as well.

I spoke to someone I found who specializes in spraying before special events at outdoor venues and they actually told me this might be a change of season issue and it could potentially go away by end of May/early June (our wedding is in July). I haven't heard anyone else complain about it, but the Maitre'D's response led us to believe yes, it's an issue but they've never done anything about it. Will just cross my fingers and hope they will go away!

    Thanks for the input!
