How to count kids for caterer count?

Allie & Adam, on April 29, 2017 at 9:05 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

So we are inviting families and I'm just wondering how to account for kids in my caterer count. Because I know the kids who are coming won't eat that much and I don't think it's right to count them per head for caterer count.

Has anyone just counted the kids as half? What do other caterers recommend? Our caterer does not have special price for kids over 5.

You don't lie. This is why I advise people to consider whether a venue gives different prices for children or vendors.

Ask your caterer. They either have special pricing or they don't, whether or not you think it's right.

You can't count kids as half; they need silverware, chairs, and entrees.

Our caterer asks how many kids and makes an appropriate portioned meal for half price.

Disclosure: we do not have kids options. The kids will just get a smaller portioned meal of what we are offering adults. Also spices and "fancies" would be kept to a minimum.

Our caterer does a kid's meal. It costs about half of what the adult meal costs. See if your caterer has that as an option for you.

Our reception is at a hotel...there is a kids price for 12 & under and a young adult package for 13 - 20. Ask your caterer what they offer.

We are offering a kids meal to 12 and over but letting the kids choose whatever they want to eat. I think if you tell your caterer # of adults and # of kids they will figure it out. I would take into account the kids sizes when deciding if you want to include them in the kids #. I know some 8 year olds that can eat an adult meal no problem.

We didn't invite any. Our venue charged the full adult rate for guests 13 and up and those under 13, who wanted the adult entrée. No exceptions, no discount for 5 hours open bar....

I went to an adult-only, family wedding a few years before mine. Not even the groom's nieces were invited. My uncle said he was bringing his kids anyway (yep, narcissistic sense of entitlement). They were around 7 and 10 at the time and their mother (probably no surprise), refused the kids' meals that were served to them, so they were left to rot on the table.

And guess how much of the adult plates they ate?

Needless to say, their behavior, not only with the meal, but the ceremony and the rest of the night, was one of the reasons why we went with 21 and up.

My venue has a child's menu for 10 and under and they are only $10 for the standard: spaghetti & meatball, cheeseburger, Mac & cheese, pizza or chicken fingers. All I have to do is give them their names and table numbers.

That's a question for your caterer. You do not want to not have enough plates for them
