How to combat the bees and other unwanted bugs

on October 29, 2020 at 12:17 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6
Hey, my question goes out to brides whom already had an outdoor wedding or are planning one. How did you/do you plan to combat the bees for your outdoor wedding?

My wedding is next June and depending on restrictions or even the comfort of our guests we may have our wedding completely outdoors. We are nervous about bees. My venue, to keep their doors opened during the restrictions on indoor services opened a restaurant using their in house caterer. They utilized their outdoor garden space for their restaurant as well as weddings. My family and I recently had brunch there at the beginning of the month and the bees were swarming the second our drinks came. Long story short, brunch was cut way short. As me and my sister and mother are very afraid of bees. This has me concerned for the very real possibility of having our wedding outdoors as we have real flowers and cocktails will be served. Is there anyway to combat this?
At the moment my venue is allowed to have indoor weddings/receptions 50 or less ppl, but if cases go up that can reverse so there’s a knowing if my wedding will be outside or inside and even if we can be inside, my guests may prefer to be outdoors, so we just want to plan for that very real possibility

We had our wedding in a castle garden and the bees were not an issue... no bugs were an issue. Unless you’re going to be literally dancing in a bush with bees, you’ll be fine.

Well, there are some candles that are supposed to ward away bugs - my parents use them when they eat outdoors in their patio. there's certain scents that bugs stray away from

i had my social hour food table outdoors after my ceremony and i don't think i had bugs as an issue either really.

My venue is an old barn with a brewery on-site. The wedding is in July, but when we visited in September, we were SWARMED with bees. The sit manager said it probably wouldn't be an issue in July, but I'm a *little* concerned

There are some things you can do to help discourage bees, but nothing's a complete solution!

Bees are seriously attracted to sugar, so if you can keep all the desserts and any sweet drinks inside that would help. Also I'd avoid super sugary cocktails and instead opt for drinks with mint or basil (which both repel bees)! Marigolds are also supposed to repel bees and could be used in your centerpieces, and the last trick I've heard is dryer sheets! Apparently scented dryer sheets repel bees, so stick a few underneath some ceremony and reception seats!

Agree with Lynnie 100%!! Now if for mosquitoes, lavender is ideal. Not sure if it helps with bees.

Hey there! Planning an outdoor wedding sounds like a great idea, but I totally understand your concerns about bees and other unwanted bugs.
