How to change last name

Steph, on November 9, 2020 at 10:44 PM Posted in Married Life 0 7
How do I change my last name and what needs to be changed ?
So far I mailed my marriage license, passport and form to social security. That’s it. What else!? DMV ?

Once you get your new card from the SSA, then DMV, then passport and bank accounts, insurance, work, credit cards, and so on. Aside from the SSA, DMV, passport, and bank, everywhere else was fine with me just emailing a scanned copy of my marriage certificate and updated driver's license to them as proof of name change.

There should be online resources for this in whichever state you live in.

SSA and DMV should be the first things. Don't forget with work, healthcare, bank accounts, credit cards, life insurance, car insurance, beneficiary paperwork, 401K, etc.

Hi Steph! Once you get your documents back from the social security office you can go to the DMV, and then keep changing your name everywhere else!

I am not so keen on sending my stuff through the mail. They told me it’s at my discretion so if it gets lost even with tracking its not their fault and I can never get that back and they also wanted my DL as a form of ID which how am I gonna legally drive and stuff if I have to send that in too... the whole process is a mess and I receive a lot of help from the government because I’m ok SSD under work credits but other forms of help have to be adjusted like my SSI which I’ll probably loose and until I can change it, anything that’s over paid will be my responsibility to pay back!!!

I would confirm that they really need your DL. I did in person because it was pre-COVID, but I showed them my marriage certificate and my birth certificate.

From what I’ve read I may not need to send the FL since married less than 2 years or something but they are telling me it has to be the original marriage certificate and not a certified copy but then online for NY state is says certified copy’s. So they aren’t giving out the right information or they don’t know and they kept saying if anything gets lost even with tracking, it’s not anyone’s fault because I’m taking that risk so to say. I honestly wouldn’t care so much if it wasn’t for the fact that the government needs my info ASAP to readjust everything and see where I am on snap and Medicare and Medicaid and my dads death benefits that I will probably loose. So technically from November to whenever it can be properly changed, if I loose my SSI or anything then I will have to pay all of it back which isn’t fair. It’s not like I’m trying to not report changes, it’s covid and had there not be covid then I would be able to go in person and show them stuff and god forbid it gets lost (MC) then it’ll hold me up even longer with changing stuff like my health insurance and food stamps because they need the certificate too !!!
