How to cancel on a vendor?

BC42917, on August 31, 2016 at 7:55 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

So last summer we started looking around for vendors and going to bridal expo's and just happened to stumble upon a pianist and really liked the idea of having one play some old jazz songs for cocktail hour and dinner. Im a music person, have been in band and jazz all thru middle school and high school band and decided to splurge for it because again i thought it'd be really cool. Well we got his brochure and it said $300 for cocktail hour and dinner, kind of steep but YOLO. (yes i just said yolo) So we set up the appointment and got to talking to him, and put down a deposit, not realizing that it was just for a plain jane electric keyboard it would be an additional $300 for a baby grand piano. Well fast forward a year and i just can't justify spending that much for a couple of hours. Now my question is how or what should i tell him that i will no longer be needing his services and need my money back without sounding rude?

You will just have to bite the bullet and talk to him about it though you may have to forfeit his deposit.

I doubt you will be able to get your money back. Deposits are usually nonrefundable.

Read your contract, you may have lost the deposit. Tell him his services are no longer needed.

If you payed him in full without a contract he might not give you your money back....(it sounds rude though)

Is your venue providing the baby grand or is he bringing his own? If he's bringing his own, the additional $300 would make sense because it's hard to transport it.

ETA: I agree with PP - check your contract. All our deposits were non refundable.

Most deposits are non-refundable. If you paid without a contract you might be out of luck for getting that back.

Why would you give him money without a contract?

You're probably not getting your money back.

You don't book without a contract....If you did, you don't have a leg to stand on....and I doubt very much you'll get your money back. He secured that day for you, you don't get to just change your mind without a commitment on your part.

If you don't have a contract you have no rights. You won't see that money

Even if you find one, he'd have to be a complete fool to not specify retainer terms not being refundable, especially after a year. Personally I don't think it's even ok to ask.

I don't understand the instrument charge. A baby grand is not something you can haul around with you from gig to gig (and no reputable musician WOULD even if they could, it puts tremendous stress on the instrument and throws it out of tune.) Either the venue has one, or it doesn't.
