How To Be Polite When Second Makeup and Hair Trial...

PrettyinPink, on February 19, 2018 at 8:37 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

So, I had my 2nd hair and makeup trial a couple weeks ago. My first one was pretty bad, but partially had to do with my unkempt eyebrows, my blotchy spray tan and a bunch of other things. My second trial I thought I loved it, but looked back at pictures and I am not too fond. It might have been the bad lighting or something, but I'm not too sure. The makeup artist already knows I wasn't too pleased with the first, because that is why a second one was requested obviously...but I left again feeling good and looked back and hated it. It was a windy day and extremely cold (my wedding will be warmer and indoors), but my hair didn't stay that long and I've seen better work done on me by a Sephora consultant (no surprise). I am locked into her services though, but how do I tell her the 2nd time that I wasn't too pleased with it?

The eyeshadow was too harsh and not blended out, the hair needs to be changed again and my eyebrows looked horrible. She might be kind of shocked, because I left with no complaints and it is the 2nd trial - I don't want to look too petty. I just had a great experience at Sephora a while ago and nothing seems to compare. I even showed her the picture I took after the makeover and told her I loved what this woman did. The company has great reviews, but I am almost tempted to see if another person from their team can come do our makeup even though I would be going into it blindly. How would I do this without burning a bridge and looking like a complete mess. I don't want to pay for another trial, so should I risk it? How can I be respectful, but also serious...because this was my second trial. There isn't much else down in the area and I don't have much time (a little over a month away), they have excellent reviews so maybe I'm just overreacting. I might post pictures tonight when I am home from work...Thanks!

I am very VERY picky when it comes to hair and even more-so with makeup (as I do full glam makeup on myself reguarly). My first hair and makeup trial I was EXTREMELY disappointed. I did not bother to schedule another trial with her because it was evident the skill was not there. To me it sounds like your HMUA is lacking in skill. You said you're locked in (I'm assuming this means you gave a deposit). When I went to a second hair trial, at first I thought I loved it, she pressured me to give a deposit on the spot so I did. But after thinking about it and really looking at it, it wasn't what I wanted either. So I scheduled a THIRD hair trial with ANOTHER stylist and FINALLY she achieved exactly what I wanted! So I simply texted the previous girl I put a deposit down with and told her I apologized but I won't be needing her services and I understand the deposit is nonrefundable. I had a similar experience trying to find the right MUA for me as well. Hair and makeup can literally make or break a look so this was not something I was willing to settle on. I forked out a lot of money for trials, but it was 100% worth it for me to find my dream team. I would give you the same advice. Drop this girl and find someone new.

Yeah. It will have to be later tonight, like 7:30 EST. I'm at work and don't have my cell. I probably should have waited...Smiley xd.

I don't mind losing the deposit, it was $50...it is the fact that if I cancel I am still expected to pay her for the day of and all bridesmaids who signed up on the contract. It is past the 45 day before wedding threshold. She has over 18 years of experience and I look at her portfolio and everyone else looks good...that is why I am confused. Do I just get another person through them? I don't want to do that and the other person looked at me the wrong way.

Oh gosh... I didn't realize that you were that close (I read your original post too quickly). This is most definitely a sticky situation. Well, we know 1 of 2 things needs to happen for sure because going into your wedding day blind is not an option. So you could either tell her you want another trial and maybe use a different photo for inspiration. Maybe the look she's trying to achieve on you just isn't something she's great at. Or your other option would be to request someone else but some feelings would very likely be hurt and there would be some definite awkwardness im sure... if you are confident in your current MUAs skill overall, I would say try another trial with maybe a different inspiration photo and see how that goes.

The picture was a very simple look. She said she likes doing "pearlescent" eyeshadows, because she said they are very "bridal". But, it was brown and not blended out very well. I already have deep-set eyes and it looked horrible. I will post pictures tonight and I will reply to your response if you wouldn't mind taking a look at it later and letting me know if I'm justified Smiley smile.

Yeah, I had a horrible spray tan and bushy eyebrows. I actually like the eyeshadow she used for this one...but it looked weird in person and the quality of these photos aren't the best. You can't see the detail...bleck. It was bad.

Yeah, they tend to do more natural bridal looks. What do you think could be worked on?

I took a look at your first one and I don't think it's horrible but the eyeshadow is most certainly not all that. It's not very blended and I think she's using too much shimmer. Shimmer shadows should really only be on the lid and not in the crease. It's very natural and I think it's fine if that's what you're going for. But the eyeshadow needs work for sure. Here's how my MUA did my trial. She gave me a more defined contour. Defined brows. Had to have my wing liner. But of course, I love full glam makeup so this was perfect for me. I love her so much she's so amazing.

Photographs would help. One thing about pro makeup vs sephora is that pros understand that how makeup photographs can be far different from how it looks in the mirror. There is also the issue of how it holds up. Will your "get ready" pictures look amazing, but by the time the reception comes, your makeup has vanished, melted of, creased? Always take pictures, both with and without flash, to see what it looks like.

If you’re not happy then i’d say so- regardless if it were after the fact. i’d even just request a new artist or terminate your contract if you can since you’re not happy. i’d also be sure to look at inspiration on pinterest for makeup & look at people with similar features- skin tone & eye colors, that can all make a difference. my makeup artist told me that a lot of women would pick inspiration from people that looked nothing like them which makes it somewhat difficult also.

This is the company, as you can see they do natural bridal makeup. They say they do glamour, but I don't really see it.

I don't see a portfolio on their site. But if you want something a bit more defined, I would mention it. Try using a different inspiration photo like I mentioned earlier. Also mention that you want less shimmer shadows used and a bit more matte shadows used. Ps you're welcome to show her my picture if it's honestly something you like.

Hard to give advice without photos! Will wait and check back later.

Also, I looked at your post about your first trial and it didn't look bad at all just a bit simple. If your second trial looks anything similar I'm sure it is fine.
