How to address babies/toddlers at wedding

Katie, on December 19, 2019 at 9:08 AM Posted in Planning 1 3
I’m getting marry early in 2020. My invitations were very formal with an inner envelope specifically stating who was invited. My fiancé has one brother who is married and they have a 2 and 1 year old. I specifically wrote just the parents’ names on the inner envelope as I don’t think that they will enjoy the ceremony and evening reception if they are tending to babies. We love the babies and help babysit them from time to time.

They never sent in a RSVP, so I recently reached out via text confirming she would be able to be there. I knew my fiancé’s brother would be there as he is in the wedding. She responded that “we *all will be there!” How do I respond without hurting feelings or seeming like a controlling bride?

Are you inviting other children? There's a big difference between an adults only wedding and excluding their children because you don't think they'll have fun with their kids there. If you't not having a child free wedding, I wouldn't say anything. If you are, I would say "as much as we would love to have the kids there, we unfortunately cannot accommodate any extra guests."

We have a ringbearer who is in 2nd grade and one other 2nd grader that will be there. Other than that, it’s only adults. It’s a wedding of around 120 guests and no one else on the list had children under the age of 9. I guess it’s just complicated family dynamics, knowing that my future in-laws will end up having to help take care of the kids which they have verbalized to me they really don’t want to do. I think I will leave it up to my future mother-in-law to discuss with them.

I would just ask her if she found accommodations for her little ones or if you can help her find accommodations. Just have a real conversation with her about your concerns!
