How to address "and family" when only using outer envelope

We did it like this:

Mr. & Mrs. John Doe

and Family

When I did my invites I addressed them only to MR. & Mrs. but I dont see why you can not add and "FAMILY" doesnt seem wrong.

Mr&Mrs. John Doe and family

I did Mr. & Mrs. John Smith and Family

I know you said too many kids to write them all out, but we only had an outer envelope as well and did

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith

Sarah, Kelly, and Nicholas

Address.

This was what I was told was "proper" but I don't think it really matters. I think writing and Family is perfectly fine. Would have been a lot easier!

I did Mr. John and Mrs. Jane Doe and family.

Some of his family has 7 or more kids so for those we're planning on writing "and family" for them, but for families that have 3 or so we'll write them out. Thanks for your thoughts ladies!
