How tight should your trumpet dress be?

Abby, on December 22, 2016 at 2:39 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

Anyone out there with a trumpet shaped dress? My dress is strapless so it was fitted tightly at the top so it will stay in place. The seamstress said she wouldn't recommend the hip area being too tight or I won't be able to get into it or sit (my dress is silk and does not stretch but I feel I can always lift it up before sitting). However, I feel the hip area is a bit loose compared to pictures of other brides in this style and makes me look wider since it's not pulled as fitted. Anyone else having this issue or have any advice?

I have the same problem and am experiencing a lot of wrinkling due to the loose material across the hips. I had the sides taken in a bit where possible so I'm still able to sit, but just plan to lift it up if needed. My seamstress recommended not sitting until the last possible moment (even standing on the ride to the ceremony) to prevent a large wrinkle that might last and show prominently in pictures. Do you have corset back? If so I recommend lacing from the top to the bottom instead-this has given me the ability to slightly let it out when trying to sit and easily being able to tighten the wrinkle once I'm standing again.

Wear roller skates to get around, then you'll know it's almost tight enough.

I had trumpet pageant dresses and unfortunately to get them to look like they do in pictures or on models, it's uncomfortable. There's really no way to have the best of both worlds, at least IMO and from my experience. Maybe someone else has the secret key though.

I had a trumpet style dress and also wanted it tighter across the hips and butt but my seamstress basically told me no, this is the way it's supposed to look. I did have some wrinkling in that area too, especially later in the day as the dress started to loosen a bit more. It's something I wish that I had been a bit more insistent about now that I'm thinking back to it.

@AshleyCT I didn't sit once all night anyway so that wouldn't have been a problem for me! The tighter the better IMO!

This is me in the sample of my dress and then my dress post alterations...the sample was clearly a size too small so I ordered up and the seamstress took it in a lot at the waist to accommodate for my hips and butt, haha. They can really make the dress for your body and do wonders, I felt so much better with my choice after it was altered. Smiley smile

There should be about 3/4"to an 1" of give on each side- so you can walk and sit.

its' not going to be COMPLETELY form fitting- because most of these gowns aren't stretchy- if they are stretchy you can be more snug- but it's fitted to your body- but you still have to be able to walk and move.
