How soon would you start planning a semi destination wedding?

Me and my fiancé are on different wave lengths right now when it comes to planning our wedding. We got engaged June 16, 2019 and plan to have our wedding April 4th 2021. I started researching and planning about a week after he proposed as we already live together and have talked about our wedding and future life plans, so to me the proposal was a green light.

He has been back and forth on everything. He will say it’s my day do whatever I want but then he wants to be involved as it’s our day but then I’ll show him ideas and he’ll tell me no or say he wants the opposite and then we circle around to the middle ground. I got him to sit down and look at the potential guest list for numbers as we have a budget. He originally refused to take a trip to Texas (we live in New Mexico) to look at venues but after I explained to him that we weren’t booking a venue that we haven’t seen in person, we are taking a trip for Labour Day to look at a couple places.

We we are also a military couple. My dad served 24yrs and he’s currently serving. We are having the wedding in TX so that his family will even show up but that makes it a destination wedding for my family that lives mainly on the northeast coast.

I feel like I should have a general time line done and out early so my family can be present to celebrate with me. But he thinks I’m doing to much. That sending invites out 6 months prior is enough.

Thought?

I would secure a venue as soon as you find a place that you both like and is in budget. Most venues book up a year or more in advance. Then work on securing your big vendors like photography, catering, DJ etc. Decorations and smaller things can wait till closer to the wedding. As far as invitations 6 months is way too early. You can send save the dates 6-8 months before and invitations 6-8 weeks before.

You really think invitations 6 month out is too early when people have to book flights and hotels and take time off work?

Yes because that’s what a save the date is for. 99% of our guest list had to travel to our wedding. We sent save the dates 7 months in advance with the city and state and included our wedding website which had hotel and travel info. We sent invites 2 and a half months before.

We are also having a "domestic" destination wedding and will be sending out STD's 9 months prior with invitations to follow 3 months prior. I would imagine your guest's wouldn't need too much advanced notice unless you are having your wedding over a holiday weekend or in a pricey/exclusive destination (i.e Caribbean, Mexico, cruise, Europe, etc). You can get last minute flights and hotels' in Texas on a dime.

Sounds totally like a typical groom thought process. My husband kept thinking we had plenty of time for things. BUT TIME FLIES BY and it's just so much better to give yourself adequate time for things

I guess I just think it’s 6 months is a bit short when I may have guess flying from Europe and Barbados like my grandparents.
