How soon is too soon for save the dates?

Erin, on December 3, 2019 at 2:01 PM Posted in Planning 0 13
My wedding is planned for June 19th 2021 (so I know now is definitely too soon lol). The majority of our guests will have to travel about 3,000-4,000 miles in order to be here, however. I want to give people as much notice as I can because it’s at the start of summer travel season, plane tickets are expensive, and hotels are pretty high here that time of year ($200/night for a Hampton Inn O.O). Most of the people were inviting have a pretty good idea they’re being invited, but I want to get them the information as soon as would be reasonable.

Save the dates are generally sent 6-8 months in advance, but since this is a destination wedding for the majority of your guests it would be totally fine to send them up to a year in advance! I wouldn't send them any earlier than that Smiley smile

I was wondering why hotels were so obscenely expensive. You can get the same room for today for $92/night. Then it dawned on me... my wedding is planned for the same weekend as the Denver Pridefest xD. So hotels are probably going to be a hot commodity.

I sent mine about 8 months in advance and lots of family are coming about 800 miles. I found them housing with friends to offset the cost of gas or flying. My fiance's side is traveling maybe 100 miles. Not far. But a lot of friends are coming out of town too. But not as far as your guests. 3,000 to 4,000 miles is a long way. I would send out no earlier than a year. 10 months may even be okay too. Most people probably won't buy their airline tickets and hotels until 3 to 5 months out.

Thank you for the response. I’m definitely leaning towards that year mark since it also happens to be the same weekend as the pridefest and hotels are gonna be crazy

I know if you're searching flights on google, you can set up an alert for when prices drop. You might also be able to do the same for hotels, but I'm not entirely sure on that. Just thought I'd share that with you in case you wanted to pass that along to your guests!

I realized too late that it’s the same weekend as Denver’s Pridefest xD. While I feel a certain sense of satisfaction about making some more... conservative members of my family come to Denver during Pridefest, everything is so much more expensive. And I do not know enough people with guest rooms for about 40 people. I mainly want to give people the chance to save to be able to afford the presumably higher airfare and hotel costs due to the big event in town.

Of course! We only found enough people to host my family because it is my hometown and I have a lot of people at my church that are willing. But we also only needed room for 14, not 40. Totally sending the save the dates early is best for you! Have you looked into blocking off some rooms at a hotel to save them for family?

I'd say anything prior to June 19th 2020 is too early. We had more than half our guest list out of state, so we sent ours out 10 months ahead of time with 1 hotel block set up and our website finished. Our wedding was in July 2019 in Denver.

I’d send to family, close friends, and people who will have to travel far in June 2020. Airlines usually won’t let you book more than a year in advance anyway so no sense in doing it sooner than June 2020.

But I would ONLY send to family, close friends, and out of town guests. Other local guests can wait until it gets closer. You just don’t want to lock yourself in to your entire guest list that far in advance.

I've read 8-10 months for save the dates, but we are hoping to send ours out as Christmas cards (still don't have our pictures though) for our wedding in October. We are having a "mini destination wedding" so our families will both have to travel at least 2 hours and stay in hotels so we want to give them plenty of time to make arrangements and make plans.

June 2020 bride here. We sent our save the dates in September. We are having a semi destination wedding and wanted to give everyone enough time to get their hotel rooms.
