How soon is too soon for Bridesmaid Proposal Boxes?

merebear 10.5.19, on May 7, 2018 at 12:54 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 5

My proposal boxes are basically done! I have one bridesmaid with me in NYC, 1 in Nashville, 1 in Atlanta, and 1 in Chattanooga TN (we all know each other). Wedding is October 5th of 2019 so basically a year and 1/2 from now, BUT a destination wedding on the beach of Hilton Head, SC. Should I go ahead and mail out the boxes now? We have had a long engagement and our Engagement dinner was right before Christmas, so I am basically dying to ask my girls. Also, My fiance hasn't even started on his groomsmen proposal boxes yet (lol)...so is it OK that his go out at a different time than mine or should I wait?

Ok first of all, your FH doesn't need to make proposal boxes for his potential groomsmen. I don't know any guys that do that or have done that, they generally just prefer to ask straight out.

Second, it is waaaaay too soon to be asking people to be in your bridal party. You shouldn't ask until you're 6-8 months out from the wedding. We've seen it here a million times, brides coming on to complain that they asked their bridesmaids way too soon, and now they're not friends anymore, but they're stuck with them. Relationships and commitments can change in a year and a half, you really should wait.

Third, you also do not have to do proposal boxes. You can just ask your girls straight out.

Agree with Mrs FallBride. Proposal boxes put a lot of pressure on the recipients to say yes. Why not ask them straight out (again, less than a year to the wedding) and then give the gift after they say yes?

It sounds like you really care about your girls and cute that you made them special boxes. Many people have had bad stories with asking bridesmaids too early and there is concern for that many times. Personally however I asked mine a year and a half out and I don't regret it at all! So that truly depends on you.

Our wedding is July 20, 2019 and I sent out boxes in April. My fiance is sending out his in July. Most his groomsmen are in the same state, but most my bridesmaids aren't! They said it was helpful that I had picked out a company/color/dress for them in advance, and decided on a date/venue/hotel so they can start planning for it! I was in a wedding that gave 8 months heads up and I was the only out of town bridesmaid and I was a student at the time, so the extra $1,000 felt like a lot to save in that time!

Thank you ladies! FutureMrsD and ISaidHallYes i was kinda leaning towards that thought process as well. Me personally, i don't have a large group of girl friends..hence the small bridal party of 4 girls. I know for my specific situation these 4 girls will say yes (1 is my sister) so I'm not worried about this putting crazy mounts of pressure on them. I don't think my FH will have as an elaborate "proposal box" as me, but i think it should be up to him on whether or not he wants a gift for the guys (and its not unheard of so...). Ultimately, I've noticed that having destination weddings are a bit different as far as timelines go too. With the travel plans and resort fees, no way i could give these girls only 6-8 months out notice. Thanks all for advice and clarity! Smiley smile
