How soon before a dw symbolic ceremony should i have a legal ceremony in the states?

Alexandria, on July 1, 2019 at 3:19 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 8

Hello WeddingWire-land!

I am having a destination wedding in Mexico on October 31, 2020. My FH and I have already decided to have a legal ceremony at a court house and a symbolic at the Mexico venue. My question is: What is the least amount of time we can have between the legal and symbolic ceremonies? I don't want to get "married" too long before I have, what I consider, my actual marriage ceremony but I also want to make certain the all of the processes have time to go through, etc.

And, yes, I am aware that many people think differently on the subject of actual vs. "fake" weddings, but this is a personal decision and one that we have decided on. Thanks in advance! Smiley smile

For a destination wedding you have to get married at a court house here before to make it legal, so it’s perfectly normal. Most of my friends have done it a couple weeks before their destination weddings.

One of my coworkers got married in Mexico and in order for the marriage to be legal in the United States they had to go to the courthouse to get married otherwise it wouldn't have been recognized in the United States. She went a couple weeks prior to her destination wedding.

I think it's considered official as soon as you turn in the paperwork, so right away in your case? Theoretically you could do it the day you leave to go to Mexico? I'm not 100% sure on this

Just make sure that people know you will already be married. I'd be a little annoyed if I was invited to a DW that was a really a destination wedding re-enactment because you got married in the states. I know ppl have differing opinions on this, but if i'm invited, i'd like to witness the actual ceremony.

Thanks for your input. No one cares and just wants to celebrate our marriage with us at our ceremony!

Thanks Michaela! I believe that we have to put in paperwork for our license but have to get married officially (and get the certificate) before we leave for our actual wedding in Mexico. Its complicated lol but it could be a lot worse if we were getting legally married abroad! 😂

Definitely doing the courthouse thing so his grandparents who cant make the trip/travel can be a part of it. A few weeks sounds totally doable!
