How old does it have to be to be considered old?

Nicole, on September 19, 2015 at 9:39 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

I'm not really planning on wearing jewelry as part of my wedding ensemble, but I have a beautiful pair of diamond earrings Fella gave me for our first Christmas. By the time the wedding rolls around, I will have had them for two and a half years. Is that old enough to be my something old? I feel like 'something old' implies at least a generation old, or something like that. Thoughts?

It's really up to you. I'm of the camp where it has to be something from an older generation but I don't think there are hard and fast rules. I wore my grandma's bracelet and my mom gave me two more bracelets that my dad had given her throughout the years.

That's what I've always thought, too. I just don't want someone to offer me a 'something old' (mom, grandma, aunt) and it's not my style, so I don't want to wear it, or something. I know that sounds pretentious, but I wouldn't want to wear a pair of earrings, or a bracelet that I really don't like.

Just because you're wearing it doesn't mean it has to be visible. Nor do you have to wear it. It could be carried or incorporated into your bouquet as well. My best friend wrapped rosary beads around her bouquet for her wedding.

Nicole you can always have your something old from another generation tied onto your bouquet instead of wearing it. That is what I am doing with my grandmothers locket

My something old is going to be a hat pin that belonged to either my Great Grandmother, or my Great Great Grandmother. I'm not wearing it, but it will be incorporated into my bouquet.

Given that it's just a tradition, not a mandate, you can decide for yourself what it means. But it's traditionally a tie to a previous generation. You could even ask one of your older relatives to use something you admire, and make it both your something old and your something borrowed.
