How much to tip?

Mariam, on July 1, 2020 at 3:39 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6
Hi everyone,
We are having a 50 person wedding. How much is appropriate to tip the following people, if at all:

- venue coordinator- caterer- photographer (8hrs)- videographer (5hrs)
The photo and video services are through a small company. I’m not sure if tipping is standard - I do wedding photography myself but it’s just me so I just get paid the fee I charge.
I don’t want to break the bank (feel like we already have!) but also don’t want to be rude or go against proper etiquette.
Thanks!

Everyone will say it’s 20% proper etiquette. that’s what I plan on tipping however.... My PERSONAL feelings about having to tip them 20% is something that I vehemently disagree with butI do it anyway because the last thing I want is an upset videographer. They still have to edit that footage if ya know what I mean. I was a server and bartender for a long time and I understand the importance of being tipped because I was only making about two dollars an hour. I find it interesting that anyone who’s everyone now thinks that they also deserve a 20% tip. They’re already charging for labor and their time and their work, but for whatever reason people like to jump on the server and bartender bandwagon and create this 20% standard tip for them as well.

    A standard 15-20% should do.

There’s a lot of online articles about this but if I followed them exactly it would have been an extra $2000 just in tips. I don’t have money like that. I tipped $100 to people there all day (photographer, dj, venue owner), and $40-60 to people who were there part of the day (cake, florist, officiant, ceremony musicians). Exactly 20% for food and beverages before the service and staff charges, which was about $450. I just think 20% per person is completely unreasonable when you’re already giving them $500-5000 for their services.

I appreciate your reply because I really feel the same way. My wedding isn’t even big and I already feel like my cash is just flying out the window! I don’t want to be disrespectful either but I think I need to try pay within my means if possible...

Tip based on the quality of service provided. Did they go above and beyond the call of duty or were they just doing their jobs? Don't tip for bad service and wait until after you have had time to reflect on how the day went with them to see what each should get.
