How much to pay my friend to do my hair?

Amy, on July 26, 2017 at 10:24 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 25

I asked a friend to do my hair for the wedding. We're not that close - I don't see her that often anymore - but I knew she'd do a good job and the lady I normally go to for haircuts doesn't do weddings. Anyway, my friend didn't set a price but being that we're not THAT close, I want to pay her something. What is a good price that isn't insulting one way or the other - too low or too high? I'm not going to have any fancy updo, I doubt it will take her beyond 45 minutes to do. Just curl and a half-up waterfall braid style. Everywhere I look online says it depends on your location and it seems anywhere from $20 to $75 is acceptable.

Clarifying about the we're not that close statement - I want to pay her a fair rate and not undercut just because we're friends, and I don't think we're close enough that she'd assume she'd be doing it for cheap or free.

I'm trying to figure out where I remember seeing anything under $50 for hair because looking again on Google, everyone is saying at least $75, and upwards of $100-$125 for hair. I could've sworn I saw $35 or something like that, but maybe I was imagining things or forgot a 0...

My hair dresser only charges $40 for styling. I am from a really small town so that is def not the price that others pay

I hate that while coming up with a price thing. Does she do this for a living or just good at doing hair? Have her give you a price before committing instead of trying to figure something out. Ask her how much so she knows you're not expecting it for free, then move forward from her response.

I wouldn't use a friendor... what if she backs out last minute and you can't find a replacement?

You read somewhere that $20 is acceptable for wedding hairstyling? Umm, no, sorry. That is way too low. You can't get any hair service for $20. That would be insulting. I would give her at least $75 which is more in line with hair styling at a salon. And in many cases, $75 is below market rate.

Do not use someone who is not a professional. Without a contract, or at least something in writing, you are stuck if something goes wrong. It's not worth it.

Hair styling can vary depending on what you are doing and where you are located. Mine is $150, but I have very thin short hair and she is adding a ton of extra hair and basically working miracles. It's worth every penny to me.

Ask what she normally charges and pay her that.

ETA: Treat her like a vendor not a friend. Like others said get a contract, etc.

I would budget for whatever it'll cost to use the replacement you'll inevitably need to hire when this friend decides something else is more of a priority on your wedding day.

Is she a professional? Pay her her regular rate.

If she is not a professional, find one.

If she works for a salon, call the salon and find out what she charges there. If she doesn't, call local salons and ask what they charge and use that as a guide. I do hair and $20 is honestly insulting for something as important as wedding day styling.

I'm my area most updos start at $40 and go up from there depending on how much hair and how intricate the style is. I've done weddings where I've only charged 40 per person and others that were substantially more than that.

Mine is $95 per person for a similar hairstyle. I got quotes from a lot of places that were a lot higher (closer to $250) so I think the suggestion of giving her $100 is a good one. I am in SF Bay Area.

She is a former professional...works from home now. I already asked her and she said yes so I don't know how I'd go back now and say never mind. I don't really see what the big deal with working with a friend is anyway. Maybe you all have very unreliable friends, but she's very reliable so I'm not concerned with her backing out for a reason other than an emergency. She only lives maybe 15 minutes away from the venue (closer than I do) so it would have to be something pretty terrible of an emergency. Which obviously yes, a professional would have that written into a contract and probably a part of it would be finding a replacement if that terrible emergency happened. But I'm not extremely concerned-2 of my bridesmaids are very talented at doing hair and what I want is simple enough that either one of them could do it in the case of a dire emergency. My hair is really the least of my concerns for my wedding day, heck I'd be happy with just curling it myself as long as my veil stays in. I'm in the midwest and getting married in a small town so I would think that I'd be on the lower end of quotes but y'all are right in saying I don't know where I found the $20 quote, because there's no way that would be possible.

Friend or not, you need a contract. Is she coming to your venue? I honestly wouldn't even think of paying under $50 plus tip.

You should pay her whatever her book rate is for doing your hair. And please tip her.

    I came right to posting.

You can find out what to pay her by calling the salon she used to work at. Pay 100% that rate plus tip.
