How much to pay a young ceremony musician?

NicknLeeta, on December 9, 2014 at 1:31 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

A good family friend of mine has a early high school aged daughter who is very talented on the violin. We asked if she would be willing to play Ave Maria for us during the ceremony. She said yes and she's started learning it now (almost a year ahead of time!). There was never any discussion of payment, but I wanted to pay her a little bit to say thank you and also make her feel like an adult. How much is a reasonable amount to pay her?

Hmm...I'm not sure what you should pay her. But I can tell you that I'm paying my pianist 250 & my violinist 150.

It's a big chunk out of my ceremony budget but it's important to us.

Have you spoken with her mom? Has she ever been paid to perform before?

I would give here $150 for her time and effort. Still cheaper than a professional.

My friends little girl (she is 6) sang in our wedding. I gave her a gift bag full of goodies-kids cooking apron, cooking supplies (she likes to cook and has cooked with me some), nail polish, lip gloss etc. She seemed super happy with it. If she had been a little older I probably would have tossed a gift card in too so she could have had a little kid shopping spree.

So I would say less than $100 is probably totally wonderful to a tween kid.

Around $100 seems fair, since it does take a while to learn a new piece.

Just one song? I would give her $50 cash or VISA gift card.

You guys have all been so helpful, thanks!

I think I'll talk to her mom about it first and see what her thoughts are, then go from there using all of your suggestions!
