How much to offer friend-hmua?

Bailey, on August 4, 2022 at 10:18 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 7

I am getting married destination, and my cousin who is a HMUA (does not practice but is licensed, she only cuts hair professionally but does not often do styling for events) has expressed that she would be honored to do our H&M for the wedding. We have not done a trial yet, but I want to go to the trial with an offer for her in case it goes really well. She does not have a price point at this time. I do not believe she has ever done H&M for a wedding other than her own, which looked lovely.

Where I'm from, hair and airbrushed makeup, not including the trial usually runs a bride around $160, about $20-$40 less for bridesmaids. I am paying for 5 bridesmaids hair & makeup, that is not airbrushed, no full glam looks. Very natural style. How much should I offer to compensate her? I want to make sure she's fairly paid and feels respected, but also taking into consideration that this is not her day-to-day work/top skillset.

I was thinking of offering to pay for a night of her stay at the resort (value of around $400) I could also get her a nice gift? Google says the average HMUA in my area makes $33 an hour, so for 6 hours of her time that would be $200, which seems very low. Obviously I would also tip if I went the cash route versus a compensated room, though.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

How kinds of her to offer her talents to you! Would she be doing everyone, that sounds like a lot for someone not used to doing events. Make sure to build in a little extra time cushion into your getting ready time line. I d pay per person so if the typical cost of bridal hair and makeup where you are is 160 for the bride I d do 160 for bride 50-80 for each bridesmaids hair (depending on the style) and 40-50 for bm makeup, extra for lashes, if she's doing the mom's too I d keep that the same as bm prices. She may not evens accept money or give you a big discount but definitely make a fair and generous offer. If she does give you a discount I d gift her a bottle of wine and a visa gc. Have fun!

I would pay for her accommodations and give her a thank you card with a cash tip. The $33 per hour does not seem accurate for wedding makeup. The problem with visa gift cards is you have to spend the exact amount when using it up, it won't let you use part on the card and the rest with another payment unless you apply it to your Amazon gift card balance

Thank you two for your input! I think I'm leaning towards paying for her day-of stay at the resort and the cash tip + card. She's not much of a wine drinker, otherwise I love that idea!

I agree, I do feel that $33/h was very low for wedding makeup, but also felt like $600 + tip was a lot for a family friend who offered her services. I just didn't want that to come off ugly!

I think offering to pay for her night’s stay is a very solid option and then doing a thank you card with a cash tip. If you really want to be nice I would suggest getting her a voucher for a nice meal in the area of the destination so she can enjoy her time the next day as well.

Thanks for your input! it seems to be the consensus that the free-night is the best option, and our resort is all inclusive so food and drink are already free for her!

Who thought that having a friend or family member could make this part of the planning so difficult? I'm glad to see a plan that can work out here.
