How Much to Give for Gift?

Katie, on February 13, 2025 at 11:48 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 3

I just got married this past July. We had a rehearsal dinner, pretty big wedding with band, & a luncheon for the family the day after. None of my family lives near us & my awesome mom graciously paid for all of my family's accommodations at the resort where the wedding was held.

We are in our mid-40's & didn't register for anything; but of course, friends/family still gave us gifts. My oldest brother in particular was very generous & gave us a check for way more than I would expect.

About a month after our wedding, my oldest brother got engaged & he & his new wife had a courthouse wedding in December (just them). Later this month they are having a family dinner one night to celebrate the occasion, which we are flying up for. I don't think it will have any wedding reception type vibes... basically dinner, drinks & a cake though with probably less than 20 family members.

They didn't register for anything either, but I want to gift them money or gift card. Do I give them the same amount they gave us? Go less since it's not as big of an event? Not sure what would be the acceptacle recriprocation. Thoughts??

You would gift the same amount they gave you. The intention of any gift is to wish the couple well in their marriage, not pay for your plates at a reception. Congratulations on both of your marriages.

I agree with the previous commentor. I would give the same amount. What you gift shouldn't depend on how fancy of a wedding they have.

I also agree. You're giving because you love and them towards them starting their lives together, not having to do with where or how they hold their special day
