How much should we pay for a DJ??

I've never had to hire a DJ and we are afraid we could get cheated if we do not research first. Does anyone know the avg cost for a DJ for about 4 hours. What should we look out for?

Perhaps it each state has a significant difference in pricing. NJ (with a weel established DJ) ur looking at spending approx. $1,200 for four hours.

Back in the day...1993 when I first founded Gotta Dance Dj's, my going price was $300.00 for a wedding, and that's when I was a rookie. The truth is, I was not worth $1200.00, get the picture.

It all varies, I dont give and hourly rate, my clients hire me for the day. I do weddings from $1200 - $5000 and more even, its not just experience, its also how much work I put into the event. when my clients hire me, I start working for them the day they sign my contract! but I can say the avg. price is about $1000 - $1600, so just find out what your getting for the price.

if you want to think about it in an hourly situation here it goes

if your paying 1200 for 4 hrs, and you have 200 guest.

1200/4hrs = 300hr, 300hr/200 guest = 1.50 per guest per hr. and thats not much, its cheaper that a movie...

avg cost for dinner is 45 - 75 per plate and its only there for 1 hr, photographer is expensive, and the only person who will remember them is the bride and groom cause that is who they deal with.

you have the Dj all night! like I said... make sure you are getting what you pay for.

if you have more dj questions please ask, dont get cought in a trap.

What are you looking for? There are a lot of variables when you are pricing DJs. Do you want someone to just play music and do announcements or do you want someone who is an entertainer?

Where do you live? How much experience do you want your Dj to have? Where are you having the reception? A lot of reception halls keep lists of vendors they have worked with in the past and that they can recommend. All in all, don't be afraid to pay a little extra for a DJ, they can make or break the reception.

The best bet is to do your research you may find a DJ for cheap that has many great reveiws and you get them for a great discount. Always keep in mind some DJ's that are starting out may be writing reviews for themselves to boost what looks like a good rating because they dont' have any weddings they have done and it is scary to think they may be practicing on yours. I would always go with reputable reviews, references and video's of the DJ in action in making your descision. I had a bride I quoted $675 for a 4 hour event and she informed me she was going with the DJ for $250, the DJ never showed and the bride called me back frantic and we were able to help her because we had other DJ's on staff that were able to cover her event, thank goodness she only gave him a $100 deposit so I gave her a break because of her situation and we did it for $575 and is now one of my best references. So going with the Cheapest may work out for some but not all.

It depends on what you are looking for. Some sjust play music. We work to create custom intos, custom lighting, timeline development and direction. We work full time so we charge more then a person doing it part time on the weekends but we also are wedding entertainers and not just Djs.

Brides: When choosing your entertainment for your wedding, you will find $300 djs, $3000 djs, and everything in between. The most important factor when choosing entertainment for your special day is to see if your DJ is a good fit. So before you break out the checkbook remember one thing. This is your wedding. You only get one shot. Make it count.

Everyone in here that only wants to spend a couple hundred dollars on a DJ, just save your money and hook up your phone or ipad or laptop to a couple speakers because that's the low quality service you'll get for a couple hundred bucks. If you aren't ready to spend the money for a good DJ, save a little more and push the date back. People remember three things from the wedding, how nice the decor was, how good the food tasted, and how good the DJ was!! If you want a memorable night of partying on the biggest night of your life, don't get cheap. The right dj/mc truly makes all the difference. If you want just background music and are not really looking for your crowd to enjoy a night of dancing then by all means, pay your couple hundred bucks to get that. Good dj's bring good music and good equipment. That goes the same for cheap Dj's. Just food for thought for those of you looking to cheap out on the one vendor that makes or breaks your party.
