How much should i give my pastor?

Courtney , on January 9, 2018 at 11:43 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

My pastor is a good friend. He is a preforming a small private ceremony for us. About 20 minutes long in front of 20 people. There was no pre-marriage counseling because its an interfaith wedding. It's a local wedding so there is no traveling involved.

What's a good amount?

From what I heard, its typically a donation to the church so people tend to give more. $100-300

We are donating $500 to the church and $250 to the priest. Also tipping coordinator, alter servers and musicians.

If it is a free will offering, whatever you feel most comfortable with. We paid for the organist, clean up/set up crew & use of church, we than gave the pastor some money.

I've always heard that ~$200-300 is a fair "donation" amount for your officiant if he/she is through a church and unpaid to do it for you. Keep in mind you're paying for their time & expertise just like you would if you found someone on the internet. Ours is being paid to be there (not a church pastor), so we will probably only tip him an additional $50-100 depending on how well he does. We'll give it to him after the ceremony.

    I think I read anywhere from $100 to $500.

Are they invited to your reception? If you are having, couldn't tell from your post. Agree with 50-100 unless you could do a personalized gift.

Yes we're having an very small and informal reception immediately after, which is when I planned to hand him a check.

Would I just give a donation to the pastor himself since we're having it in our home and not in the church or synagogue?

I think we gave $400 to my pastor. Our ceremony was outside at a venue not at the church and was about 90 guests, we also didn’t do premarital counseling.

And we gave it to him in a thank you card at the rehearsal dinner hosted at my parents house.

Our pastor is going to be paid and we plan on inviting him and his wife to the reception following the ceremony. I was thinking of tipping $50 or should I do a donation?
