How much photography time do i need?

Julie Beth, on June 30, 2020 at 7:46 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 16
I'm trying to decide between the 10 hour package and the full day package. I'm the type of person who likes things to be fully documented. The full day is $300 more which isn't huge in the grand scheme of things. Additionally, it includes a wedding slideshow and 16x20 portrait. BUT, we don't necessarily need those things. So, which would you choose? We plan to arrive at the venue at 10am and the reception to be over by 10pm and allow for clean up time. We get 13 hours at the venue. The ceremony will be at 6pm. I want my exit to be captured, but it's popular around here to do faux exits which is when you run through it a couple of hours before the reception is actually over. That way, the photographer gets what they need without having to stay and capture 2 more hours of drunken dancing. Would you do a faux exit? Thoughts? Thanks Smiley smile

If you want any getting ready photos I would do full day. I’m not doing that since I really only care about the ceremony, bridal party and reception photos

I do want getting ready photos, but with 10 hours, I thought it would be enough to include some of that as well. This is if we do the faux exit..

I would do the 10 hours and do a faux grand exit, but personally I wouldn’t look at pictures of drunken dancing. I guess on the other side you run the risk of something happening after the photographer leaves, but also what is the photographer going up be doing for 8 hours if they arrive at 10 am and you’re not getting married until 6pm? How many getting ready pictures are really necessary, and do you want pictures before everyone has either hair or makeup? Could the photographer cover 12pm -10pm? That still gives 6 hours for getting ready pictures, decor pictures, etc.

First look, portraits, etc. But yes I agree! I wouldn't have to do a faux exit if she covers 12 to 10. I guess I just don't really need the whole reception covered either. It gets redundant. Thanks for your advice!

Of course! I’d talk to the photographer about how long they will need for first look and pre-ceremony pictures too since they’re the pros after all.

10 hours is plenty, but for just $300 I’d take the full day

Coming from a former wedding photographer,

I would totally faux exit because at the end of the night people can be a little too intoxicated and guests dwindle down that there may not be a lot of people there for your exit.

And an hour or two of dancing photos is all you really need.

And as far as getting ready, do you want getting ready pictures before your make up and hair is mostly done? You can get what you want in photos of getting ready by having the photographer come when your hair is mostly done, your make-up artist is just getting started with that before you or your BP is dressed. That’ll give them the opportunities they need to get you getting ready and all of your details.

We are not doing a 1st look so our photographer said she really only needs 30 mins or so for staged getting ready photos. She’ll then stay til cake cutting. I don’t need need a bunch of photos of people dancing so it works well for us just paying for 6 hours.

You could take the full day and gift the 16x20 portrait to your parents for in laws I'm certain they would love it.

10 hours is a long time but for 300 dollars I'd just go with the full day! I think you will look back and be glad you had them their as long as possible.

10 hours is pretty extensive - that should be fine with some planning.
