How much $$ per person for food?

Sarah, on January 29, 2018 at 10:53 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 19
We're getting married and expecting roughly 180 people. I'm trying to decide what a reasonable amount would be to spend for food.

Most likely going to have buffet to save but could do family style. I have heard about 30 per plate but not sure.

We're already having an open call bar too which is pricey but I don't want to have only beer and wine.

We are feeding about 150people with a buffet with carving stations and are paying about $25 a person; it really just depends on what your budget allows. Start talking to caterers and see what they offer and based on that you can know if you can afford that many people or if you have to scale back on what you want to offer for dinner.

You need to allocate about half your budget for venue/food and drink. No one can tell you what a regular price is because the greatly depends on the type of food, the way its served and the median price in your area. Looking up the average cost for weddings in you area can help - but the only real way to tell is to reach out to caterers. However - Food and Alcohol will generally eat up half your budget - so to get an idea you need to cut your budget in half and divide that by the number of people you are planning on inviting. This will help you see if your budget is realistic or not. If its not you will either need to cut you guest list or up your budget

The budget calculator on here can be helpful.

The price will depend on where you are located. If you'll give a city, posters will be more able to help with pricing.

This is completely dependent upon where your wedding is located, what kind of cuisine you’re going for, and how much you’re looking to serve. $30 can barely cover a dinner and maybe an appetizer at most nicer restaurants, not even drinks, so maybe think about it that way. In a higher cost of living area, $100-250 pp is the norm, but you can definitely find $30 pp in other areas. BBQ and Italian are the most affordable options anywhere. Also, buffers aren’t inherently cheaper. I guess it depends on the caterer, but I’ve been told that a lot of times the cost balances out when you compare buffet, plated, and family style (more food vs. more staff vs. more serving dishes). Check out a bunch of caterers in the area for estimates and see what works best for you.

We're doing the plated option with 3 different meat entree options that comes out to about $55/person. We asked about the family style option and that came out to about $63/person with the same options. We're expecting around 125 people but we were quoted that price based on a minimum of 100 people. Family style is always going to be the most expensive option because the caterer will need to prepare extra amounts of food, more so than what a buffet needs.

We are feeding about 100 people and expected to pay about $20 per person for a Southern BBQ buffet.

Price definitely depends on your area though.

$26 for chicken and pork options. Includes Salad, breads, and coffee / Milk. Plated dinner for 150+ people. Kenosha, WI

unless you have deep pockets I wouldn’t be feeding fish or beef at your wedding. Paying more then $30 a person is crazy expensive.

We are however paying $26 for the plate and $17 unlimited beer / wine / liquor so $43 PP total

Your venue, food, and alcohol all together should be about 60% of your total budget. As far as what is a good price per head to spend? This depends on your location and the type of food you plan to have. Have you contacted caterers in your area, or looked at venues with in-house catering? They can give you pricing and sample menus to look at.

Do you mind if I ask the location? I'm trying to downsize to a smaller, more reasonable budget.

I've cut the guest list from 50, to 34, to 18.

    I'm also in CT.

It varies dramatically depending on where you are and what you want to serve. Here, even a brunch wedding would be $65pp plus tax and gratuity plus bar, so I think that's insane. We found other catering options that are not bundled with a venue to save otherwise we'd be having a tiny wedding.

I am ordering from a local restaurant. We will have hired staff (hired separately $250.00) to pick up the food and serve it, replenish, clean up etc. It equals out to be about $9.00 a person. It will be served buffet style. We will be having the following:

    Fried chicken

    Mashed Potatoes

    Mac N Cheese

    Potato Wedges

    Rolls

We will be purchasing soda and bottles of water for guests to get out of giant buckets of ice.

I'm from a small country town and am getting married in a barn. This food is perfect for that setting and is delicious as well. And extremely affordable!! So it's a win in my book!

Just a suggestion, maybe include a vegetable or two instead of two potato options. Also consider if you have any vegan or vegetarian guests.

I could do that. Maybe do, fried chicken, mac n cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, cole slaw and rolls.

    Does that sound better?

This really varies based on your location. My reception was at the Fairmont in Sonoma and came to about $315 per person.
