How much on average should a registry gift be?

Mrs., on February 7, 2019 at 5:52 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

We're registered at Target and I've registered a few kitchen and household items so far like a Kitchenaid, pots and pans, and a good quality vacuum. We don't necessarily need some of the cheaper items, as we're don't want to register stuff we don't need or want just for the sake of registering stuff. But a lot of these items are hundreds of dollars. Is it just me, because I can't fathom having my guests spend hundreds of dollars on a gift for us. I also don't want to only have very few items on the registry either because I feel like that seems like I'm suggesting they gift us cash.

What are some of your favorite items you've registered for? And what are some lower cost items you've registered for?

This is why I like my Amazon registry, people can contribute towards the big ticket items.. But I guess the same could be accomplished in your scenario with a Target gift card!

My big ticket items are similar, pots and pans, vacuum, etc. Lower cost is décor stuff and some salad tongs that look like our cat's arms haha

As long as there’s a range of price points you’re fine. The general rule is a third under $50, a third between $50-$150, and a third $150+. This might be a know your crowd thing but for us family members spent $300+ on us. If they didn’t buy us a big gift they bought several under $50 things that added up to several hundred. Also people like to go in together on group gifts. Everyone is different but for us all of our more expensive gifts were purchased first and the smaller stuff was purchased at the end.

We tried for a 1/3 under $50, 1/3 $51-$100, and $1/3 100+. Amazon lets you "group gift" so people can contribute to more expensive gifts. Some of our under $50 gifts include a cast iron griddle, floor grates (we have a lot of house upgrade stuff), a food scale, stainless steel colanders, a cake lifter, double wall insulated clear coffee mugs, a small bathroom trash can, a glass pitcher, a set of drink glasses, a shredder, glass tupperware, and serving plates & bowls.

We're doing a honeymoon registry, which I know is a bit controversial... but I did learn what people are comfortable spending, and I would say anything between $20-$100 is appropriate. You can add a couple of more expensive things if you think close family members will spend that, but I think the price range I mentioned is perfect.

In terms of less expensive items, daughter registered for several sets of nice quality towels (they had a bunch, but they were old, worn, and probably pretty inexpensive to start with, so good quality linens were definitely something they'll use but not necessarily spend $ on themselves), sheets, placemats & napkins, a variety of serving pieces that go with their good china, some specialized kitchen utensils they didn't yet have, etc. That gave them a fair number of single items in the $10-50 range, that could be bought individually or bundled together, depending on how much the guest wanted to spend. About a third of their guest list were 22-26 years old, and many of them purchased less expensive items as gifts while older family & friends gave them cash/checks. Her KitchenAid was both one of the most expensive items on the registry and the first item purchased.... Variety is good! Smiley winking

Yeah, as much as FH loves Amazon, he loves Target wayyy more and wanted the Target registry. I also immediately searched for cat salad tongs because I needed to know what they looked like haha. So fun!

This is super helpful, Kelly. Thank you! How many items did you register for compared to your number of guests?

Haha, yeahhh. Super controversial on here. I didn't want a honeyfund but more of a future fund for wherever we land, but after seeing all the negative feedback I decided against it. FH has some old school relatives and I don't want to offend them before I meet some of them for the first time. But thanks! I'll try to keep most of my stuff in that price range

Sorta wishing we went with Amazon now, but we're registered at Target. But I think some new serving dishes and plates and such would be good to register for! Thanks for all the ideas!

We registered for around 130 things between 3 registries and invited over 200 people. We just couldn’t think of anything else to add that we absolutely needed. And we live in California so not a ton of space and extra bedrooms to store stuff! Everything was purchased off our registries before our wedding and at the wedding we just received cash/check. Most people bought more than one thing off our registry because we didn’t have a ton of big ticket items. A lot of under $100 things.

You can absolutely have more than one registry! If you have a website, they can both/all be listed there. Daughter had Macy's (mostly good china, etc.) and Kohl's (for household goods; although, thankfully because they were clearly NOT very good at running a gift registry, Kohl's has since discontinued their service). The one thing you want to be careful about if you have multiples is not listing the same thing on more than one site, because that will increase the likelihood that you receive duplicates. A Target and an Amazon registry are probably a really good balance. (Daughter didn't like the quality of any of the towels at Target, so that was the biggest factor in her choosing Kohl's over Target as her second.)

You can definitely have more than one registry. I think that is common. We have Bed bath and beyond and target. But I am figuring switching to amazon or a different store if FH and I can't decide on a plate set. At first I thought target was my best option for those but now not so sure based on color/reviews Smiley amazing I think it's important to have a big range of pricepoints! You may not think you need smaller kitchen items but you can always update away!
