How much of your finger does your ring cover?

Suzie, on December 10, 2020 at 7:20 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 18

Hey all - fiancé designed a ring. it's very lovely, but question: with the middle stone and a few stones on the side, it's like 15-16mm wide. I wear a 6.5 US so it'd cover the majority of the entire top of my finger. Does anyone have a ring like that, and, if so, is it fine? Does it get in the way of everyday tasks? Does it rub your other fingers? I'm very active (biking hiking climbing etc) but I figured i'd just take it off during heavy activity; I don't care about wearing it all the time. I welcome your advice!

also - does anyone know how to change your wedding location? we're getting hitched abroad but it won't let me choose a non-us destination on my profile...

thanks!

I don’t know how wide mine is in comparison to yours, but other then getting used to it rubbing my other fingers I have zero issues with mine! I do take it off when working out, hiking, running, etc. but that’s just my preference! I would love to see photos of your ring though!

Well, I am wishing for the large Rhapsody ring one day and it will cover literally my entire (ring size 3) proximal phalanx bone on my ring finger 🤪

This is my wedding set & when I tried it on I had no issues with it rubbing my other fingers. For now I just wear my engagement ring (the middle band) the rings in front & back will be soldered together a few weeks before the ceremony. Gonna feel weird not wearing anything until our wedding!

Mine's is fairly thin. If I were as active as you, I would stick with a silicone ring.

With the halo, my ring pretty much covers my whole finger. Not sure about the actual dimensions, but my center diamond is 2 carats and my ring size is 3.75.

Ugh, I fall in love every time I see your ring 😍 Do you just wear it alone, or do you have a wedding band as well?

Thanks all, so far! I debated having just a rubber one, but I figured I'd rather just take it off as much as needed for outdoor activity. I'll probably leave the nice one at home and wear a rubber one (or nothing) for camping and travel and stuff.

My ring is being custom made (like an artist is building it, it's not being made from a mold) which is rad but unfortunately means I can't see it in advance. Your photos help a lot though! The band is quite slim but the actual stones (it's some medium-sized sapphires from this old sapphire mine in Montana, not a super-pricey massive diamond) are what are so wide. So hopefully the fact that the band is thin and ring is otherwise plain won't make it look too large vis-à-vis my finger.

Glad to know no one so far has noticed any problems.

Awww thanks 🥰 I wear a thin, plain Cartier band that matches my hubby’s ring. But secretly dreaming of an oval eternity band!

My bands are fairly thin, so I don’t have any issues with rubbing or discomfort. However, if I’m doing something active, I wear a silicone band.

I got stubby fingers 😆 but my bands are thinner to make my fingers look decent lol.

I think you think a thin Cartier band would be perfect. I think I would have a hard time wearing anything with that gorgeous ring 🤩

I would probably be bothered by such a large ring, but I use my hands constantly (I work as an athletic director, teach fitness classes and coach sports, and so a lot of hiking, biking, climbing, etc) and don't typically wear rings.

I have a pretty small engagement ring (center stone is 1/2 carat) and slim wedding band but even I find I prefer wearing my silicone ring for most of my everyday activities and reserve my "real" jewelry for going out, special occasions, when I just want to feel fancy, or I want my husband "with me" for good luck. My silicone ring is about 5mm wide and my stacked wedding band and engagement ring are probably about 6-7mm wide. My wedding band is just a slim plain band so I can wear it alone for times I want a dressier "real metal" ring but don't want the bulk of my e-ring.

For me, the height of the center stone is more problematic than ring width in terms of it getting in the way. I just find I constantly bang or catch the stone on things because of how it sits higher on my finger than what I am used to. If you're active and don't wear rings, you'll find yourself snagging it when you put on your seatbelt, it catching and spinning when you are walking your dog and it pulls on the leash, and needing to be real careful when putting on gloves. I definitely would not wear your ring at all while climbing or when lifting weights, and would stick to wearing a low profile ring when doing other physically active things. For me, wearing the silicone ring gives me less to worry about, and if I just took off my metal ring all the time when wearing one would be inconvenient, I'd spend more time not wearing a ring than having one on.

My husband also has a metal ring and silicone ring. His metal ring already has a ton of scratches (he wears his silicone one at least 5-7 days out of the week and we've been married for just over 6 months), and he just showed me that he managed to rip a chunk out of his silicone one. He's an engineer and avid cyclist and is always working on things and building things and fiddling with bikes, motorcycles, and the like. Metal rings are honestly not designed for active people who use their hands a lot and are really impractical.

I would go talk to a ring designer, when we went in to have mine designed they kept in mind my daily activity’s. And we came down to it being low profile without a lot of added designs on the band. That way it wont get caught or rubbed on anything or scratch the children. I think that maybe you should talk with your fiancé about maybe exchanging it for something else that you’ll love and will wear all the time. Isn’t that why he bought it for you? Not that his design would be any thing less than what you deserve. It’s just maybe, not practical.

I wear mine everyday but take them off once I walk through the door when I'm home and during cleaning or heavy activity. It took awhile to get used to the weight but I adjusted

Thank you to everyone who shared thoughts! I ended up just making the side stones a lot smaller - here's the finished product. I know sapphire and rose gold may not be for everyone but I'm pretty into it!
