This is what I found online when I was wondering the same thing!! This link has an alcohol calculator which seems to be very helpful in figuring out how much to buy. Good luck!

You can also manually calculate the alcohol you need. First, estimate how many people will be drinking at the event. Second, multiply this number by four (most people drink 2 to 3 standard drinks at a party. We estimate one extra drink per person so that you won't run out!) This tells you the number of standard drinks you need to accommodate. Next, translate this standard drinks number into the different kinds of drinks. A bottle of beer provides one drink, a 750ml bottle of wine provides five drinks, and a 750ml bottle of any spirit is about 17 drinks.

Finally, multiply those numbers by the preference percentages above (50% beer, 25% wine, 25% spirits) and you have a shopping breakdown of the alcohol you need to buy.

Call a local liquor store tell them how many guests and what kinds you want and they can tell you how much of each you need. Plus if you are buying the booze yourself some liquor stores will buy back any unopened bottles( check if they do first) so you may save some money in the end if you have alot left over.I did this my first wedding and the only thing we really had left overs of was a case of champagne ( but we ordered extra of that)

I had a conversation with my venue about this and they were rather open to giving the information. She said plan on paying about $15/person total at the event, that's a safe bet!

As the groom 1 of my duties was alcohol for the reception. I spent a lot of time looking at alcohol calculators, but never really found anything that said what was actually consumed at the reception. I hope this will help those other grooms-to-be...

    165 guests

Estimated 105 heavy drinkers (4 or more drinks) and 30 light drinkers (4 or less drinks).

Here is the liquor we had and how many handles were consumed:

    Finlandia Vodka (4), Canadian Club Whiskey (4), Wild Turkey 80 proof (3), Seagram's Gin (1), Cap't Mo (4), Red wine (4 750mL), White wine (7 750 mL).

We went through 4 cases of bud light and about 3 cans budweiser. I also had 48 bottle Warfteiner. I am sad to say these were gone within 2 hours.

I only supplied champagne for the party bus and two decent bottles for the head table. Champagne is too expensive to buy for everyone and no one complained about it.

Worth noting: Bar was open the full 6 hrs and we allowed shots.

Suggestions: Do not buy Bud heavy this was a waste of money. Make sure the hall supplies the wash and that they have at least, cranberry juice, limes, cherries, OJ, Tonic, and club soda). Also, make sure the pop is Coke products because most liquor goes much better with that rather than Pepsi products.

Keeping the bar open through dinner worked well and I would do it again. Serving shots worked out because the dance floor was packed all night with people dancing with that liquid courage in them.

If you supply a craft beer, and I reccommend you do, make sure to get enough. This is the quickest thing that went out. I wish I had gotten another 4 packs of the Warfteiner.

Lastly, make sure you designate someone to be in charge of getting the leftovers from the hall to the hotel because you can throw a great after party with it.

    Good luck and have fun!
