How much is too much to expect guests to spend to travel to your wedding?

We live in Massachusetts and are planning a wedding in Savannah, Georgia. Neither of us are from that area but we liked the idea of a domestic destination so everyone has to travel. Flights from where our families live are $300-$500. Plus they will need hotel rooms, etc.

Beyond my immediate family, I don't expect anyone to travel any amount of distance for my wedding. I'm honored with every yes rsvp we receive and understanding with the no's.

Everyone has a different budget and some people go international for a Destination Wedding so I'm not sure how to answer that question accurately, however, if that's where you want to have your wedding then do it!

85% of my wedding guests live out of state and I haven't had any declines from those guests. All of my declines were actually local! I told them verbally a year out and sent STD 10 months out and everyone started looking at plane tickets early.

Btw, I love Savannah! Your wedding is going to be awesome.

I think its odd to have a wedding in a random location that neither of you are from. Do you frequently vacation there or something?

You will definitely have a higher decline rate.

Did you check with your VIP guests (close family and friends) to check and see if they would be able to make it?

This question is impossible to answer because everyone's budget and priorities are different. If people only have x dollars per year for a trip/vacation, they're not going to use it to go to your wedding in Georgia over their normal family vacation.

If something is within driving distance, I have no problem paying for gas, food, etc. to get there and back. But needing to catch flights is a whole new ballgame.

I went to a wedding in Florida on a Saturday night. Half the guests had flights at 6 AM the next morning. So none of the guests (who had been drinking since noon) went to bed before heading to the airport. Make sure you check into things like that before booking. When can your guests (who have to work Monday) fly out of your local airport?

We live in Rhode Island and are getting married in Maine. We had more than half decline because of the travel and we sent our save the dates a year out. It's a hard one but we really wanted to get married there so we did it Anyways. Good luck I hope you have a turn out!
