How much is too much: Size alterations

Kimberly, on January 6, 2023 at 1:51 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4
Hi! So my FH’s daughter went to get measured today because we’re ordering her bridesmaid’s dress online. Unfortunately, the company we’re ordering from doesn’t do custom sizing. I know it’s normal to be different sizes, but her numbers came back all over the place. I know the conventional wisdom is to order your biggest size because it’s easier to get things taken in, but she has quite the size gap. Is there a point where it’ll be too much for the seamstress to take in? If it helps, her waist was the bigger size, bust was quite a bit smaller, and apparently her hips are so tiny she didn’t even make the chart. The skirt is the usual flowy BM dress, so I’m actually not as worried about the hip area. I feel like they can cut off whatever they need to there. But will they be able to take multiple sizes off the bust?

Alternatively, should I be worried about the accuracy of the measurements? Even though I’m not getting this dress, I looked up what I would be for reference because I have junk in my trunk that causes large size discrepancies between my upper and lower body. I had gone to a different seamstress, and even my disproportionate self would have fallen between sizes much closer together.

Maybe you can find a seamstress today and ask the question. Often the bust will be difficult to tailor if it is complex or adds support. If the dress has separate material each shoulder down to a point below the breasts, it might be simple to alter at that point.

I can’t imagine it would not be doable. Believe me when I say it’s better to have “it’s too big” being the problem instead of “it’s too small”. It’s way harder to get something let out. The latter happened to my wedding dress and I was so stressed.

If her waist is the bigger size, I'd order based on that. If it's a flowy skirt that's not meant to hug her figure, the hip measurement won't be an issue. Like Erin said, "too big" is a much easier problem to work with. A seamstress would be able to take the bust in, add cups, or otherwise work their magic on the top, whereas adding fabric isn't always feasible.

Thanks! I did call the seamstress to talk to her directly about it, and she said basically the same thing you all have so I ordered based on the waist size. The only thing that has me a little hesitant is that the seamstress said something about the top size not mattering anyway because it’s not fitted, but that’s not true. It would look silly if it’s loose and baggy. But hopefully she’ll be able to take it in.
