How much for a string trio for Ceremony only?

KittenPurrFace, on August 27, 2010 at 11:11 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

Our DJ will be set up inside, but the ceremony is outside. Any idea how much something like that may cost?

It depends on numerous factors, but at least $100 per musician. Figure more like $150 - $200. Even though they're "only" playing 20 - 30 minutes, they have rehearsals, lessons (yes, long-time professionals still take lessons) instrument maintenance, travel, etc. And make sure that when you contact them initially, you tell them that your ceremony is outside. Some musicians can be VERY protective of their instruments because the heat/humidity can be very damaging, especially to strings and woodwinds.

    Cara,

Fees for live musicians are definitely more in major cities... LenW is right when he says that the musicians usually receive about $100 per hour. Usually though, there are extra contracting fees added into the total. $800 seems steep for an hour's worth of trio music, but perhaps that is a standard rate for the Chicago area. (We play at weddings around Baltimore/D.C.)

    Good luck!

Please send me an email if you'd like other recommendations. I have a good string-player friend in Chicago Smiley smile

That makes sense. Hoping I can find something cheaper. I just want Canon in D....I imagine someone less experienced knows how to play it. Maybe I could hire some students.

I think it would be worth noting that there is a difference in ''student-level playing'' and ''having a student perform Canon in D''. I'd assume for the latter, you'd expect to pay close to an adult performer capable of playing at the same level.

I'm not a musician, however my son plays violin so I've definitely been around the scene. Even with college-level performers, your looking at a nice charge, I'd think.

Ok, yeah I have no idea. I just know I am paying for everything basically on my own, and don't have an extra thousand for 20 minutes of music. I don't mean to downplay musicians' talents, just to accentuate the depressing state of my bank account. Smiley laugh

You might consider looking into the local youth orchestra, schools or groups, if there are any close to your location. It couldn't hurt posting an inquiry! I just wouldn't want you to be surprised at the results either way. =)

I am paying $200 for my string trio. They are in high school but they have been performing in wedding since the 6th grade. I believe they are worth it because it will be going to a greater cause because it is helping the kids live out there dream and save money. Plus its my sons godfamily so I don't mind paying this much!!! Much sucess to finding a trio you are happy with!

I think the best way to get a good idea of pricing is to contact several people and get quotes from them. Then you can get a better idea of how much string trios run in your area.

You can always have a duet (violin & cello) to cut costs. That means one less person to pay, but you get a similar vibe.

Of course I'm a little biased, but a harp is usually more cost effective! You only have to hire one musician, but still get the same full sound. For Saturday weddings in Chicago, we charge $400-500. Sunday through Friday is less. Feel free to contact me if you'd like more info!

The other concern with students is: do they have enough excellent repertoire to play 20-30 minutes prior to the ceremony(depends on the contract as to the amoun of time) and more music to play 1-20 minutes after? AND, the biggest thing is timing...can they adjust their music in the "middle" of Canon to coincide with what's really happening during the processional???

I don't know where you live, but local colleges are often a good way to get musicians less expensively. I'm in NYC, and I know Juilliard students do weddings for a lot less than pros.

We are paying $475. They will play half an hour before the ceremony, processional, unity candle lighting, and then recessional and for 15 minutes afterward for the receiving line.

I paid $350 for a solo cellist who played for about 30 minutes. I thought it was extremely expensive but both my H and I loved the idea of a cellist so it was a splurge we were willing to make.
