How much editing do photographers do?

Adriana, on October 10, 2021 at 1:04 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

Unfortunately I went through a bad breakout period in the days leading up to my wedding so on my wedding day I had 4 or 5 significant cystic acne bumps on my lower cheeks/side of mouth. I had hoped to have clear skin for my wedding so I didn't think to ask my photographer about how much editing she does for photos but now I'm worried my photos will come out horrible. We did a very intimate micro-wedding so we only paid for digital photos and just for our ceremony and couple shots/family photos for an hour afterwards and she told us it would be about 2 weeks for us to get them back. Should I reach out to her and ask her if she can edit them out or is it too late? (It's been exactly a week since our wedding).

I think pretty much all wedding photographers do blemish removal, but IMO they don't always do enough. It wouldn't hurt to ask, but be prepared she may charge extra for it because it is a greater time investment for her.

Of course reach out to her if you’re concerned. Others don’t always see the exact same “flaws” that we see within ourselves. So, for peace of mind, contact your photographer now because it’s too late afterward.

From what I have read, they do 60-80 hour work weeks behind the scenes. You can always reach out to them but don’t expect to get pictures back immediately.

Definitely reach out to her with your concerns asap! I think it is standard for most photographers to edit out noticeable blemishes, but I wouldn’t leave it to chance.

I would definitely ask for that to be edited if you don’t want it shown in your photos. Photographers don’t tend to edit out acne that I know of. I remember flipping through a wedding album our photographer did and saw the grown with these zoomed in shots of his razor bumps all on his cheeks they were really big and my husband and I wondered why the couple didn’t ask to have it edited but they probably assumed they would have been. I also wished I had told my photographer to edit the darkness under my arms because of my hyperpigmentation but I didn’t think to and have some photos with dark under arms luckily they’re just the partying photos and not the portraits so it’s fine. So definitely reach out.

Reach out to her. I'd suggest not saying something like "can you edit those out," but rather, "I had an uncharacteristic breakout that week and am feeling very uneasy about how it may have looked in pictures." This makes it clear to her that this is something you want edited, without sounding like you're telling her how to do her job.

People are so used to over-edited photos nowadays that unless the skin has zero texture and looks like a mannequin, they don't think the photographer "did enough." You still want to look like a human in your wedding photos.

The best way to ensure that these are removed is to make it clear this was a temporary thing (like a bruise) and not some defining characteristic (like beauty marks, birth marks, moles, scars, and other things that it's a coin toss whether the person considers them flaws or not).
