How much alcohol for my 150 guests?

Victoria, on August 1, 2021 at 8:56 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 6

Hi everyone! I am trying to figure out how much alcohol to purchase for my wedding reception. We are getting married in December and are anticipating a maximum of 150 guests. We are planning on serving wine, beer, and a signature margarita, and the bar will be open for about 3 1/2 hours. We'll be serving coffee and hot cocoa the rest of the time Smiley smile I have already spoken to my bartender (who is required by my venue) but unfortunately they were not able to help. So, if anyone has done something similar or knows how to calculate an estimated number, I would be very grateful for your help! Thanks in advance!

There is no way to answer that because it depends on your specific group. Do they drink beer/wine only? Do they prefer liquor/cocktails only? You have to ask your guests what they like to determine what to buy. Then go to a local liquor warehouse (BevMo or TotalWine are examples) and they will help you calculate what you need.

For example, many people on WW suggest beer/wine only with a signature drink but if your guests don’t drink those, then it will be wasted money on your part.
It is very odd that a bartender is not able to help you with amounts needed.
Will you have any cold nonalcoholic drinks or only the hot beverages?

Thank you for your response! I know it's not a cut and dry answer, but I just figured I would see what other people have done in the past. We will also be having iced tea and water.

When I asked my bartender, they just told me it was hard for them to say, so I'm kind of on my own to figure it out. I have a feeling that the majority of guests will drink beer or margaritas since we will be having fajitas, but I would like to have enough wine for at least half my guests.

When in doubt, always always ask your family and friends who will be attending what their preferences are. What your group enjoys will not be the same as someone else’s social circle.

Normally it’s good to plan for two drinks per person for the first hour and then one drink per person for every hour after that. I agree this is a know your crowd thing though. Our crowd is heavy drinkers so we probably would have had to increase those numbers if our venue hadn’t had a per person cost for the bar.

FH and I did a consultation at Total Wine and they used this drink calculator: https://www.evite.com/pages/party/drink-calculator/

We were able to enter how long the reception will be, what we plan on serving, and how many light/moderate/heavy drinkers we'll have and it'll tell you how much of what to buy! I'd calculate just the beer and wine since the only liquor you'll have is for the margaritas, and then just add that on top of what the calculator tells you.

Hi ! There are these calculators, but I don't know exactly if it helps.

In my country is simple : starting with 0,7 L of vodka/person.... Smiley laugh
