How much alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks do we need for a wedding of 200?

Sophia, on June 21, 2018 at 10:18 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 10

We are in the process of buying alcohol (from places we can return unopened) and are not sure how much to buy. Our friends drink quite a bit, here’s what we have so far:

9 handles of vodka

8 handles of whisky

3 handles of rum

6 bottles of margaritas and 32 bottles of wine.

We were planning to get like 20 cases of beer, what else do we need?

We have a water and lemonade station but any ideas on how much pop, juice, or mixers we will need (this would include non alcoholic drinkers as well)

I think you're going to need more beer. My cousin's wedding had 125 people and they went through 25 cases of beer for a 5 hour reception. I would get another 20 cases of beer, and hopefully you can return what isn't used. I would get more wine too. Most bottles have 4-6 glasses worth and best shot, you're getting about 195 glasses of wine. I think it's always better to have more than not enough. I would get 8-10 cases of water too.

Hi Sophia! Welcome to the WeddingWire Community! Smiley ring Since you're supplying alcohol for a party of 200 that will drink more, I would probably look into purchasing additional alcohol. I think you should try using this Drink Calculator to help you get a close estimate of what to supply! Good luck!

Hi Sophia! Welcome to WeddingWire and congrats on your engagement! Smiley heart

That all seems good to me!

I found an article where they say "a standard guideline is 50% wine, 20% beer, and 30% liquor." It also includes "serving tips" and how you'll "assume each guest will drink one drink per hour."

As for mixers and non-alcoholic options, "soda, tonic water, juice, and club soda...lemons, limes, and ice" are all some to keep in mind. The article goes into cost-cutting measures, ratios, and more, too!

I hope this helps. Please don't hesitate to reach out with other questions regarding any details of your wedding planning process. We are always happy to help!

Our wedding is 250. We bought five handles on liquor for vodka, rum, gin and whiskey. We bought 20 boxes of wine. And three kegs. We also bought 4 bottles of peach shnapps. We've actually been told that this will probably be too much but we can also return. We're going super over board on soda because calculators told us the average person has seven drinks throughout the wedding. So we're getting enough mixers to give everyone about nine drinks of soda whether they are with alcohol or not. We can also return this but my fmil also said she'll just keep some because she uses it when having family get together and holidays at her house.

We are planning on 1 drink per hour per person! That's just a rule of thumb I've heard a lot.

Gin! Gin and tonics are a very popular summer drink. I'd also get tequila, and maybe cut back on vodka. Depends on your crowd, but it feels like you have a disproportionate amount.

Our guests lean heavily towards whisky, vodka and beer but I will get some Gin, great idea! Should I consider any specials mixers for that? We are thinking tonic, soda, and juices already?

I think that's sufficient! Other than fancy cocktails, I don't know anyone who orders gin with anything other than tonic or soda water.

This is what my party planning app tells me for 200 guests for a 4 hour event:

    100 750-ml bottles of Wine
    300 12-oz bottles of Beer
    14 750-ml bottles of Spirits
Count on guests consuming two drinks in the first hour of your event and one drink during each following hour. The general rule of thumb is 50 percent of your guests will prefer wine, 30 percent will prefer beer and 20 percent will prefer mixed drinks.

Simply offering wine and beer? Plan on 60 percent of your guests drinking wine and 40 percent drinking beer.

    Hope that helps! Smiley flower
