How Many Wine Varieties?

Pancakes, on November 8, 2014 at 7:58 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

Not sure how many types of wine to get. Just 1 white and 1 red? I found a Malbec that I like because it's a sweeter red. So I was thinking of also adding a couple bottles of those. Thoughts?

Thanks!

If you have the luxury, I would get two whites and two reds, something bold and something lighter. A Cabernet to balance your Malbec and a Chardonnay and a Sauvignon blanc or a Pinot Grigio.

I'd' say two and two also; split the quantity and when one runs out, those drinkers will drink the other. Most often,k I see the exact choices that Lara mentioned. You might add a pink Moscato or sparkling Moscato.

I agree! Minimum one but I'd leave maximum at 2 because one wedding I went to had a large selection but the Riesling was super popular and ran out... If they woulda just stuck with fewer flavors nobody would have felt that they ran out, if that makes sense?

I did a Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio and a Pinot noir and Cab Sav. The wine was way more popular than inexpected so everyone must have been happy with the choices!

Our catering/bar package includes one red and one white. I asked to add a second white because I like the sweeter wines (I picked a Pinot Grigio) and I know not everyone does. We have one red and one white to please the guests, and the Pinot to make me happy ;-).

Our intent was to do two whites and one red. But my MIL kept buying us merlot as well as Cabernet. So we went with it and had 2 and 2. Our white wines were Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay.

Since you are wanting your red to be a sweeter wine, you want a more traditional grape because a lot of people don't like sweet.

I'd do 2 and 2 - two dry and two sweet (sweet and dry white, sweet and dry red).

We're going two red and two white. One might end up being more popular and running out but most people will then switch to whatever is left.

I like making sure there are options.

I think I'm in the minority with having a big wine selection. So far I have 7 choices, and we'll likely add another 3. I'm a girl that loves her variety, and I get my wine from our local vineyards so it's easy to get carried away with the choices. Smiley smile

Great discussion! Love the option of 2 dry and 2 sweet (with a sweet/dry red and white)

Any opinions on having a sparkling wine instead of "champagne" for the toast? We are doing Kosher wines, which is already pricey..and the champagnes are even more.... but there's a popular "sparkling" wine thats sweet and everyone likes thats not as pricey.... The only way people will know be the bottle looks like wine and not a "champagne" bottle...

My opinion of champaign toast is to toast what you have so I think that would work great

I would have two choices as well. I only drink red and I don't like anything sweet so if you had options I'd be a happy camper!

We're doing two reds and two whites. Most likely Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir for red and then Chardonnay and Moscato for white.

Check with your venue- lots of places won't let you have red wine because it can stain. Most weddings I've gone to, there are at least 3 wine choices - pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc, and white zinfandel (or another blush).
