How many speeches are you having at your wedding?

I don't know how to divide up the speeches. I know my mom will give a speech. My sister is my MOH, so she will give one, and two of my BMs are my best friends and have had speeches written for about ten years. I only have one other member of my wedding party (on my side). I think he'd feel left out...

I think he'd feel left out if he didn't give a speech, but that's already four speeches just from my people! My FH's Best man and parents will also likely give speeches.

My question is how many are you having, and how are you spacing them out? All at once? A few at the start of dinner and a few later? Help!

I'm probably going to have more than the average person, but I'm not worried. We will have some very good speakers at my wedding. Although, are you supposed to plan who is speaking? At every wedding I have been to, you make sure that the MoH and the BM have speeches, and then you open the floor (it's usually during dinner, so who has time to get bored? I suppose don't listen if you aren't interested). So at my wedding, besides the MoH and the BM, I'm sure my dad will give a speech, and he is ridiculously good at speeches. People still talk about my dad's speech at my sister's wedding and that was 14 years ago. I'm guessing one of my fiances parents, some of my bridesmaids, and maybe some of my theatre friends-especially those who we were both in shows with. But, most of my friends perform in some manner, so their speeches should be quite eloquent if not quite funny. I, personally would rather have more speeches and skip all the extra stuff that usually bores me-the bouquet toss...

The garter toss, and readings and songs at the wedding.

I am totally the odd one out here, but I really enjoy the speeches when I'm a guest a weddings. If they are concise and touching/funny, they can go over really well!

    Maid of honor (my sister)

    Best man (his brother)

And probably a "thanks for coming" from us.

Anyone else wants to talk I'm shutting them down. This is a party, not Speech Club.

We are having my mum, his dad, my bestie, his bestie. All have 3 minutes max!

We will be doing our thank you speech at our welcome party (we are having a destination wedding).

I am in the minority here but I LOVE speeches at weddings, as long as they are thoughtful and concise. We plan to have the first speech as the first course is served and then a few more which may go into dinner. I think we only have about four people giving speeches mind you. As long as you give your people a time limit of no more than five minutes and they start as soon as people arrive, it should go smoothly.

Thanks for the advice ladies! Ill space them out. I'm also the odd one out that loves speeches at weddings as long as they're short and sweet. And the great news is that my family and friends are a riot so I'm thinking the speeches will be highly entertaining.

MOH (Sister) and whoever FH chooses for BM. And that's probably it.

I don't think you're the odd one out! I also love toasts/speeches, and have enjoyed them at every wedding I've been to. I just love hearing the people closest to the bride and groom talk about their love story and their hopes for the future- I usually cry lol. To me, the speeches at our own wedding are one of the things I'm really looking forward to! We are having the maid of honour, best man, and both of our fathers give speeches/toasts. I hadn't even thought about how to format it, I didn't know there were options other than all at once lol, but now I will definitely think about about it. I'd say, just do you! The day is, above all, a celebration of your union and the support that those around you have for you, and if speeches/toasts are important to you, then go for it! (although I won't disagree with having a time limit for each one lol... some people are ramblers)

One of my most fave photos of my DD & SIL's wedding, is the attached one...her sister giving a toast/speech. Nearly all in attendance, snotted right along with me.

I have NO CLUE who will give any, at ours?! I guess I must assign someone to such...maybe ask who would have been our WP if we had went with one? My parents would HATE it...both of them. I would like for us to give a thank you sort of speech...but nothing that seems an extension of our vows...just thank everyone.

Is it unheard of to just sort of pass around the microphone and let anyone who wishes to do so, make a small toast in between songs??

    Best Man speech

Friend said grace (if you want to call that a speech)

For the most part wedding speeches are horrible, and some people should never be given a microphone. I hate getting embarrassed FOR people.

I like toasts that are meaningful, well planned, and concise. However, to avoid too many at the wedding, we're having the parents do their toasts at the rehearsal dinner and limiting the wedding to two MOH and 2 BM.

ManOH and Best Man will, I think. I have 1 bridesmaid that might, FH's parents might...doubt my mom will (just not her thing). We're just gonna open it up to whoever wants to. I'm sure a drunk uncle and a couple of friends will say something....probably 1 or both FBIL's too

@Kat, while I'm sure many people would like the chance to toast you, but I think that would be a nightmare! If I did that it would take up my whole reception. Maybe you can "pass the torch" at the rehearsal dinner though. That way the people who are closest to you (parents, wedding party, etc.) will be able to participate without handing the microphone to your "3 sheets to the wind cousin who gets weepy when talking about love" (or is that just my family?)
