How many pictures do you normally get with a photographer?

Ryan, on September 7, 2018 at 11:49 AM Posted in Planning 0 9
So my fiancé recommended one of her buddies to be the photographer for the wedding and I absolutely LOVE her work on her Facebook, but as I was looking at her packages I saw that if we were to do the 9 hour package we'd only get 300 retouched photos. I emailed her asking if we'd get all the pictures she took plus the 300 retouched photos and she said that's the minimum she gaurentees but we typically get more, if she sees good pictures she throws them in there. I feel like the price is pretty good for a wedding photographer, but what do you guys think? Is it me or does a minimum of 300 photos for a 9 hour seem low?

That seems low to me. We received 930 edited images with full digital rights for 8 hours of coverage with 2 shooters. But, we paid more ($2,400) and didn't have an album included.

Honestly that seems like a really good package deal.

We went with the least amount of time and photos possible because that's what our photographer recommended. We don't have siblings or grandparents and only 3 bridesmaids/groomsmen. So we get 3 hours, 60 proof book images, 20+ photos in a bound album that she makes, and an 11x14. If we want to purchase digital rights or additional prints, we can, but it isn't included. And her price is LOW. This all works out perfectly for us.

Moral of my story: have a conversation with your photographer and hopefully they will take all of your wedding day details into account and give you an honest estimate of how much time you will need. I'm sure you can always add more images if you choose so I wouldn't base your package choice on how many photos you want to end up having. They take thousands and will give you as many as you want, you may just have to pay for extras.

This is SO low! We got 250 back from our engagement session, less than 2 hours.
I would keep looking. I didn't even consider anyone who put a number on the images we'd get back.
There are photographers with decent prices out there. I live in a high cost area and found on on Facebook for $2,000 all day no limit to the hours, 2 photographers included, and engagement session. He just started a few years ago so his prices are lower but his work is good.

I got about 400 edited photos in 3 different filters including B&W. so I guess roughly 1200 total. Our photographer only edited the ones he thought were best. We had full digital rights. He cost $250/hr for 3 shooters the first 3 hours and then 2 shooters once the wedding started.
I think 1900 is great for that package. I didn't get any prints or album with mine. Its nice to have more photos to look at, but you don't really need more than 300 photos.
Definitely just make sure you like your photographers style. Mine was very artistic and creative. The last thing I wanted was a cheesy photographer, but a lot of people like that style.
    Enjoy your day!

We are paying $3,200 for 8 hours and 800+ images from our wedding, then 100+ from our engagement shoot! It's one photographer and her assistant.

My FH is a photographer. He would tell you that more isn’t always better. Some photographers will just keep clicking the shutter and send them all to you. And a lot of times when they “edit” them, they just open them in Lightroom and apply a pre-made adjustment to all of them. Takes less than a minute to do that. Then, MAYBE they go through and pick their favorites and edit them a bit more.

Do you really need 100 photos of the first kiss? Probably not. So, if you like the portfolio of this photographer and the quality of the photos, then 300 edited/good photos is probably a really good number. And that’s the minimum that guaranteed, she probably says that to protect herself.

Also, at $1900 for 9hrs, including prints and an album, I don’t think you’ll find a better rate than that. That’s $211 an hour just for the wedding day. But let’s say she takes 5 hours to go through all of your photos and edit them. Then another 5hrs to create your album, you’re now at $100p/h minus the cost of prints and album to her. That mays still sounds like a lot, but compared to most photographers, that is such a bargain!

My FH is shooting a wedding a for a friend of his, so he gave her a good rate, but he’s still charging $2000 for 8hrs with no prints or album included. He will give her all of the photos when he’s done doing some minor touching up though.

The price is also dictated by the area of your wedding. Certain parts of the country will have higher rates.

I say keep looking so you have a lot t compare to, maybe you’ll find someone with a better package to offer, maybe you won’t. But at least you’ll know you’re making a well informed decision. Smiley smile

We spent more on our photographer, but we got over 1,000 photos. Is it just one photographer, or will there be a second shooter? We had 2 photographers for 8 hours. I personally would want more photos, but I think it depends on your budget.

I agree with this. That is actually a really good price for what you're getting.

I got close to 800 photos with 7 hours of coverage, but there is no way I need or even look at that many photos. I paid $1200 which was a steal in my area but mainly because this was a side job for her.
