How many marriage licenses did y'all get?

Amanda, on July 12, 2017 at 12:51 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

My last name is Smith and his is much more unique, being a Smith for 25 years makes me very much ready to change my last name. Also, my fiance and I have been together for just two days shy of 9 years. So I'm ready!

I am wanting to get my marriage license as soon as possible. So I have added stamps and filled out most of the forms, but the one thing I am stuck on, is how many copies I should request. Did you guys order enough?

Thanks all!

The marriage license office told us one certified copy. So that's what we went with.

I just got two of them, because it's super easy to go to the office of vital records and have more copies printed while you wait. In Louisiana, anyway.

Also, the name change stuff is faster in person, if you're in a super hurry. I'm having to do things quickly because my husband is in the Navy, and I need to get my military ID quickly because REASONS.

Jessica--you just need one *license* (and you can only get one, anyway.) But I assume the OP is talking about copies of the marriage certificate. If you are changing your name you will need to present your marriage certificate to all sorts of different entities, some of which will give it back and some of which won't.

We are both changing our names, so I'm thinking we will probably get 8 copies (4 each)

StPaulGal is right, certificates! Probably going to go with 4, just to be safe, since it costs less than 20 bucks here in OR.

I've changed my name with the Social Security Administration, DMV, and Bank so far, all with our one copy. Nobody has asked to keep it yet... not even make a copy! One may be just fine for you too.

Sort of unrelated but I am the total opposite when it comes to last name! I have a really complicated last name and my new one will be Budd, and boy let me tell you I am so excited to not have to phonetically spell out my name to people over the phone and have them butcher it and send my confirmation emails/ packages/ billing information to the wrong last name!!

I only got the one original, no copies. Like @LookUp, I've changed my name with SSA, DMV, and banks with just the one. I'll probably go get a certified copy when I change my passport because you have to mail that one in.

We are getting 4. After doing my homework. 1 to have on hand, 2 to send in with each of our passports and the cemetery where our burial plots are requires an original in their records.

    And that one surprised me!

Ugh I haven't even looked up marriage license or name change cause it gives me a headache.

But I am definitely pumped about changing my name from something crazy common to FHs name. My last name is Davis and I'm soooo ready lol

I am so ready to change my name. My last name is Hardin, so I've spent most of my life being called Hard ON. I haven't had a real relationship with my father in almost 30 years, so it'll be nice to no longer have that connection to him either

Three copies of the real license, more if you're dealing with the military or visa issues.

Yeah I have already experienced them butchering his name within the last week, and was like well I've got to get used to it! At least at the pharmacy I won't have to give 3-4 pieces of information since I've got a common first and last name!

I've got a coworker going from lalonde to Taylor and she's the opposite, she's going to miss her maiden name.
