How many Diy's are too many

Morgan, on September 26, 2019 at 1:29 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

Hello fellow DIY brides!

I am pretty crafty and feel like I always want a project to work on, so I was excited to have a bunch of DIY projects for my Wedding. However, I do work full time, and get married in about 6 months. My friends who were brides all recommended only doing 1 big DIY project (invites, or seating cards/chart, etc.)

How many projects are you planning to take on?

How do you recommend prioritizing projects?

I did centerpieces, designed all my invites and signs and some other decor.

i think it also depends on how big the project itself is. for instance for designing my invites and signs i just used templates.

I did all of my signs which I finished months before the wedding and I did all of my real flowers from Sams which I could not do until the week of. You definitely don't want to get too burnt out.

    Thanks Melle,

Yeah, I feel like signs could be a single day/few hours project and wouldn't suck up too much time, especially if you can get them done early enough.

I am not crafty at all, nor did I have time to do any with my job & our home renovations. The only ones I did were place cards, I was happy with them and they were pretty easy. I did stuff like welcome pamphlets for our welcome bags, ceremony programs & menus, but those were more design then have shipped to me. My mom made 1 sign & put together our favors & welcome bags too.

Haha I already feel overwhelmed, but crafting calms me, it almost feels like I would feel better if I had more projects

My advice (16 days out), do as much as you feel comfortable with, and pay for the rest. I have 3 projects left to finish....and I am so over it!! BUT I am committed at this point!

I think that there is such thing as too much DIY and that prioritizing and playing to your strengths is key... this article was really helpful to me in deciding what I should focus on:

I diy-ed my ring box, card box, cake stand, centerpieces, repainted my cake topper (included pics), and currently working on my wooden tree "guest book". I will be doing my own invitations, flowers, flower wreaths, wedding favors, reception food and lastly, my wedding cake. I have a year to go and half done with my diy list. Thankfully, my sis (MOH) is helping with food and the wedding cake and one of my bridesmaids is helping with wedding favors.

It is very individual. My first wedding, I was working full-time, going to law school 3/4 time, and serving on law review. I did absolutely no DIY.

Second wedding, I was self-employed. I wasn't getting enough work, so I had more time than money. So I did a lot of DIY.

The thing to remember is that most DIY either doesn't save you money at all (after counting the cost of materials, including those you mess up), or saves you so little that you're essentially working for 50 cents and hour.

    For priorities, think about:

    1. Do I really need this thing at all? For example, for a simple wedding (no complicated religious ceremonies or bilingual aspects), you probably don't need programs. DIY programs are more expensive than not having programs.

    2. If the answer to #1 is yes, is this actually going to save me enough money to justify the time it takes?

    3. If the answer to #2 is no, is this something I just can't get commercially, or that I really want to do just for the fun of it?

So for example, DIYing our chuppah (Jewish wedding canopy) saved us about $800. That was definitely worth it. DIYing our invitations didn't really save us anything, but it enabled us to have artwork based on the artwork of our ketubah (formal Jewish marriage contract), which was not something we could have gotten commercially. DIYing the cake probably didn't save us anything, after NotFroofy spend the summer making a whole bunch of test cakes to make sure she had the right flavors--but then again, eating all those test cakes was fun. But we didn't try to fool around with DIYing bouquets, which wouldn't have saved us all that much and would have required a lot of effort at at time when we really wanted to spend time with our guests. And instead of DIYing decorations for the luncheon immediately following the ceremony (which was held in the private dining room of a nearby restaurant), we just decided to forego decorations. (After all, a restaurant has to decorate nicely every day of the year, so we didn't feel we needed to add to it.)
