How many dish options for reception dinner? (Beef/Mushroom Bourguignon)

drmariner, on May 18, 2016 at 8:48 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

How many dish options are you providing at your reception dinner? What is really required to politely host guests?

We'd like to serve either beef bourguignon or mushroom bourguignon (vegetarian). The background is this...

Our reception dinner menu has been the source of some drama. I'm an American pescatarian (vegetarian from ages 4-28, so still queasy about fish) foodie getting married in Colombia - a meat eater's country. We finally found a caterer we love. We took three friends to dinner, tasting four dishes - 2 beef and 2 seafood. The seafood wasn't crowd-pleasing (good but depends on your tastes). Everyone loved the beef dishes - but duh, we only tried beef. Already, the food will be foreign to many Colombians but I figure - potatoes, beef, onions, & carrots = familiar ingredients in a new dish, makes that manageable.

I also thought of saying on the website RSVP, "Despise mushrooms and don't eat beef? Tell us in the 'allergy' comment and we'll hook you up."

Thoughts?

I would not choose mushroom bourguignon - a LOT of people don't eat mushrooms. I think for your vegetarian dish you should go for a choice more people would eat.

I agree with Jeleebeenz; a lot of people do not eat mushrooms (my FH being one of them). I would lean toward a vegetarian dish that is more "crowd friendly," or maybe offer a third option if the mushroom dish is your favorite?

So, i don't eat much meat and i absolutely HATE mushrooms. I wouldn't do mushrooms, most people don't like them, and if a vegetarian doesn't like them, they are going to starve.

Rehearsal dinners dont need to be a big affair, but I feel like both beef and mushrooms is something people are often split on. You might try a more universally appealing option like chicken and a veggie that isnt so divisive. Some people REALLY hate mushrooms and lots of folks dont eat beef even if they eat other meats.

We're doing catered wood fired pizza around the pool at the vacation house from a place with a mobile pizza oven. The menu is 1 appetizer (garlic knots or caprese skewers), salad, 4 types of pizza, and chocolate chip cannolis for dessert. Nothing super fancy. I didnt want to deal with a 2nd wedding, menu planning-wise the night before.

10% of our guests ordered the vegetarian dish and we love mushrooms, in my family.

I should mention - only one guest is a vegetarian she's a huge fan of mushrooms.

But it is that I don't like beef or mushrooms crowd I'm worried about. We do have an option for specific food allergies or dietary restrictions. I wonder if non-beef eating carnivores who don't like mushrooms would use that.

Or perhaps it's worth adding a third dish to the mix. We return for out mushroom bourguignon tasting this Sunday...

BTW, I love, love love, the pizza idea @Niki. I actually suggested artesanal pizzas (modeled after my favorite beer bar in Honolulu, Bar 35) but FH and our (former) wedding planner balked at the idea as too informal. Of course the pizza in Colombia hasn't prepared them...

Chicken is a "safer" option but honestly I love beef and prefer that over chicken any day! I agree that making your vegetarian option that is more friendly to meat eaters, like a pasta, would be better.

I think there are a lot of people who don't eat beef. And just as many who dislike mushrooms - I happen to not eat beef and LOVE mushrooms. But I think a third choice would be ideal if manageable.... either chicken or fish -if there is a different fish option.

I'd have to agree with a couple of the above posters. I'm a vegetarian and I get so frustrated with the veggie option so often being mushroom when so many people (myself included) don't eat mushrooms (it's also a common food allergy). So personally if you want to stick with the beef dish I would go with a very simple dish for the vegetarian option and that way it also works for those who want a simple dish. Something like a basic pasta with a salad (pasta alone is very heavy and can make people sleepy). Plus, if you make it a marinara pasta then it's vegan and not just vegetarian!

We are not doing an option everyone gets steak and chicken with veggies except for the few I know are vegetarian.

See, as a vegetarian, I HATE when the vegetarian dish is always " very simple." That's part of the drama alluded to. Our former wedding planner said the "vegetarian option" is just the sides without the meat.

Seems like adding a chicken option is the way to go.

I also thought of saying on the website RSVP, "Despise mushrooms and don't eat beef? Tell us in the 'allergy' comment and we'll cook you up." (I'll update the post to ask this too!)

For people that are allergic - we have a box for that and our caterer will prepare a third meal accommodating all allergies we give him. Another reason I was hesitating to add a third option.

    Thanks for all the feedback!
