How many cocktail tables/ banquet tables will i need?

This is our second marriages each so we are doing a VERY low key wedding reception (no bridesmaids, attendants, first dance, etc) - basically throwing a lot of the traditional stuff out the window and just having a party.

We are planning for roughly 100 - 125 guests. We are doing a cocktail style reception from 7pm - 10pm with heavy appetizers and drinks. We have a musician playing from 7-10pm for atmosphere and dancing. Since there's no formal sit down we are opting for a mix of Banquet tables (rounds of 8) and high top tables. There's also a bar right outside the Banquet room where I'm thinking people might congregate as well. The room is a little tight so I was thinking of doing 4 rounds of 8 and 5-6 high tops? But I'm kind of just guessing... the venue wasn't too sure either so I'm just wondering if anyone has any idea?

oh - in the Banquet room there's also some sofas and chairs scattered around the room as well for seating (maybe enough for 10?)

Hey there! Do you have enough room to fit in tables for all your guests? Are you wanting to keep your table count low because of space limitations, or is it a style choice? I'd personally be inclined to include as many tables and chairs as fit comfortably in the space so guests have places to sit, chat, give their feet a rest from dancing, stash their stuff etc. What does your venue suggest is their capacity for guest seating? Do they have photos or table plans you can look at to see what other couples have done with their setups?

I would have as many seating options as possible- people will get tired. It looks like there are quite a few seats at the bar which will help!

I’m having a cocktail style reception- typically that is seating for 75% of guests according to my planner. I have a larger venue with 5 large round banquet tables, 3 bar height long tables, and 8 highboys (4 of which will have 2 barstools each as alternate seating). We also have a bar with seating for 8- but more for hanging out than eating at since it’s one of the bars.

we also have soft seating- 2 couches and 2 arm chairs.

Not trying to talk you out of a cocktail reception with not enough seats, that’s ship has sailed. What I have noticed when you add rounds is that people park their bottoms and don’t move. And it seems like you are trying to avoid that. Get rid of this large tables. Bring in small bistro tables usually 3 or 4 foot rounds, ask your venue manager. These may have 4-5 seats. Having rounds with a bunch of chairs makes it feel like a game of musical chairs. So have people stand and they may not stay long but atleast they aren’t fighting over a chair. And in your invitation call it a standing cocktail reception.
