How long was your Rehearsal Dinner?

Tracy, on January 25, 2012 at 10:37 AM Posted in Planning 0 4

So my FMIL has had her heart set on this particular Inn near the house that we are having the rehearsal dinner at. Our plan was to have dinner at 6pm...we are doing the rehearsal 4:30/5. My FMIL informs my FH that the dinner will be 4 HOURS! 2 hours for cocktail and 2 hours for dinner! I was like ummm WTH? Why is it going to be that long...I was hoping to be back at the hotel around 8/9 to relax and get a good night sleep for the big day!

How long has everyone else's been or planning to be? Maybe I'm just crazy, but I think that's way to much time....maybe an hour for cocktail and hour for dinner?

I haven't had mine yet, but I think it all depends on the family. I don't see any reason for a cocktail hour, especially if there is going to be one at the wedding. I do find however, that large family gatherings like that can take a long time. You have to consider how long it will take to get everyone seated, for them to look at the menu, order and then large groups like that are going to take forever to cook for. Then people just want to relax and eat, so I don't think that 4 hours for a large gathering is too outrageous. Some suggestions for compromises, cut the cocktail hour down to 30 minutes - 1 hour, have everyone go ahead and place their orders during the cocktail hour. I'm sure if you talk to the manager and let them know what is going on they would be better off having more time to actually start cooking and preparing the meals. Continued...

Another option is that you could simply have a set meal (maybe one or two choices) that everyone has to choose from or do large family platters of different entrees and sides so that people can just share. This will save a lot of time ordering. Hope all goes well.

We didn't have a cocktail hour at the RD. We only had dinner, and it was under two hours. That was with all the toasts, drinks before dinner, good byes, etc. Honestly 4 hours sounds long. I wouldn't want a 2-hour cocktail hour. You'll need to sleep and possibly take care of some last minute details.

Well, we just booked a party room for our RD at a casual restaurant, and they told us we have the room for four hours. Maybe that's what she meant?

For us- dinner starts at 7pm and it's buffet/banquet style. I figure at least 30 minutes for people to get settled, an hour or so for dinner, 30 minutes or so for us to say a few nice words and give the WP/parents our gifts, 30 more minutes to chat/finish up, and we're out of there. So that's 2 1/2 hours right there.

I've been to RDs where there was a dinner plus an open bar portion for OOT guests to show up and mingle, or RDs that are BBQs for all OOT guests - I think those are kind of like mini weddings and they can last a really long time. It probably just depends on your crowd and who's invited.
