How long till dress turns yellow?

FlowerGirl, on April 18, 2015 at 4:25 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 17

I just bought my dress from db a month ago and it may be at least a year, if not more, till we can tie the knot (long story). How long can I have it till it starts to go yellow? It's in a garment bag.

You should speak with someone about preserving your dress. Since you purchased form DB, take your dress to them.

I would call DB and explain your situation and see what your options are. I know they sell a gown preservation kit if they feel like your dress may yellow.

Good luck with the job situation.

I'm not sure if the dress is wearable after preservation? Chemicals or something, i read about that once. I have my dress too from DB and my wedding is 14 months away. I thought about this, but I've had a white coat that took years to yellow. I think your safe for a year, but I'd google it to see how long it actually takes. DB will tell you to preserve it so you have to buy the kit from them.

I bought my dress December 2013, and it came in May of 2014. It has been almost a year already, so it'll be about a year and two months sitting in the dress shop. They've been keeping it in the wedding dress garment bag that is breathable, they said it won't change color in just that short amount of time. It should be fine, you won't need to preserve it.

Just think of the clothes in your closet. Have you had a white shirt for more than a year? Has it turned yellow in that amount of time? No, things take a lot longer to yellow.

Mine came in just over a year out. I was worried about this. They told me at David's Bridal that as long as it was kept in the garment bag in a dark place, it won't turn

I think any yellowing from aging takes YEARS, like 10+ years. A year or two is no big deal. A dry cleaner or dress shop near you would have tips on the best place to store it, i.e. no natural light, hanging vs laying it out, etc... There are brides on here that bought their dress over a year out and I haven't heard any yellowing stories.

I think you should be ok. My mom had her old wedding dress in the closet in a plastic garment bag for over 20 years and it didn't turn yellow. She let one of my cousins wear it for her wedding and you could never tell it had been in a bag sitting in a closet for that long. It didn't look yellow at all. I got my dress last year around September and it's been in the garment bag in the closet. My wedding is in July and I looks just fine. I think you would be ok. But to ease your mind, you may want to talk to someone at DB.

Just don't try it on a lot between now and the wedding. Oils from your skin and perspiration you do have to worry about.

The other day I found my dress from a prior engagement. My parents never got rid of it. I bought the dress back in 1996 and it looks brand new. No discoloring or anything.

I bought my dress in June. I left in the box it came in (ordered online from DB), just took it in for alterations last week, and it looked the same as when I first got it. Smiley smile Tried it on 2-3 times from June until last week.

Call David's to find out...it's probably a very long time. One concern though...take the dress out of the bag. Call them to ask. I think it needs to breathe? Better check.

No, they told me leave it in the garment bag. They said take it out when doing alterations but that's it

I pulled my gown from my first wedding out of a bin when we were moving into our current home, almost 10 years after my wedding, and I didn't notice any yellow. I never had it cleaned or anything either, just stored it in a Rubbermaid bin.

I had the same situation as @Pander - I stored my first wedding dress in a plastic garment bag in a Rubbermaid tote - never had it cleaned, the tote was stored in a giant workshop/garage thing. I took it out and figured I'd just give it to the bridal consignment and hope for the best - it's in great shape, no yellowing.
