How long on average does it take to receive your wedding photos back?

Kelsey, on October 6, 2015 at 8:23 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

I have been married now for almost 7 weeks, and the one question I failed to ask is how long it would take to get our pictures back. Our photographer has not reached out to us. We have been the ones to reach out to him for nearly 3 weeks now, and his excuse has been he's busy or is making other excuses he cannot meet with us. He's terrible at trying to get a hold of, and never responds to emails, texts or phone calls promptly. I am kind of irritated at this point as we had to pay the $2, 000 at the end of our wedding night. He did mention he took over 3,000 photos, and has only posted his "favorites" of around 245 photos on Facebook for viewing.

...This should have been addressed before you hired and paid your photographer. Our timeline was written into our contract. It took four weeks for us to get our photographs, but some couples have a much longer wait time.

As an aside...he posted TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY FIVE of your photos on his Facebook page?!!

This guy just doesn't sound like a professional.

He had told us would post them on his studio's page, which we said was fine, but those have been the only ones we've seen, out of the 3, 000 he took.

My photographer was around 3800 for 8 hrs plus 2nd shooter, engagement shoot and some printing. Also 4-8 weeks for photos to be returned to us. But we get 500 shoots edited on usb.

What does your contract say. at this point I would be threatening him with court charges if he is over the time specified on the contract.

We haven't gotten ours yet either. She contacted me today for us to meet Monday to go over the pictures and what we want for the book. So we're making some headway. Hopefully he will get to you soon

So he posted them on the FB page but didn't actually send them to you? Are you sure that he didn't mean that he would post the photos on his FB page instead of sending them to you??

The thing is, he was a friend of a friend, so we didn't sign anything, we just trusted him. Lesson learned I guess. I don't plan on getting married again anyway haha. Maybe I'm just being impatient.

You didn't have a contract?! Oh my goodness!

For everyone reading this, please get contracts with EVERYONE, even friendors.

@Kelsey, 7 weeks is still within a normal time frame in my eyes. My photographer said 6-8 weeks. Because you don't have a contract, you don't really know exactly what you should be getting. I would give it one more week and then reach out again, this time asking exactly what you will be receiving.

My turn time for photos is anywhere between 2 and 8 weeks depending on workload and life. However, I always keep in contact with my clients after the event to let them know when I expect to have their photos done and will let the know if there is a hold up or postponement to that.

Contracts are a godsend, I've had moments as a friendor where I haven't seen a cent of the payment because I hadn't drawn up a contract prior to the event, although now I require contracts even with the best of friends in order to ensure that we're both protected in the event that something happens.

Whatever your photographer had promised (in writing or verbally).

There're two methods wedding photographers use to edit their client's wedding photos:

1-Outsource: This is when photographers use professional editors to edit their own photos (the quality here depends on how serious these photographers are about their work). The delivery period here will vary (sooner usually more expensive).

2-In house editing: That's when the photographers/or their sub-photographers edit their own photos, this can take weeks or unreasonably months.

Technically: as a professional wedding photographer coming from a background in high-end fashion retouching with 60-100 weddings a year. You shouldn't really have to wait more than a couple weeks for your wedding photos BUT:

    -Good photographers are busier.

-Most wedding photographers are not efficient with editing.

-It's a healthier practice to wait a day or two during the editing process to re-examine the edited images as many times as possible before delivery (looking at the images for too long will compromise the photographer's judgment).

    I hope that helps
